Sberbank card expiration date is approaching
Sberbank card expiration dates
Any Sberbank card, whether debit or credit, has an expiration date. As a rule, it is three years from the date of issue. Cards cannot be perpetual for several reasons:

- Due to natural wear and tear. Although the card is made of plastic, its condition deteriorates over years of regular use, and the details become faint.
- Due to a change in card design. Although infrequent, banks update their products, including cards.
- For security reasons. This refers to credit cards. By reissuing them, lenders also update customer information: place of work, income, etc. This is precisely why you may be denied a new card.
- Due to the development of new technologies. For example, old cards were not equipped with NFC, but now we can pay for purchases without inserting the card into the terminal. If banks did not reissue payment instruments, contactless payment would not be available to even half of users.
How to find out when your card expires
Information about the bank card expiration date is always displayed on the front of the plastic. For example, "07/22" means it will expire on August 1, 2022. This means you must manage to reissue the card by the end of July. In addition, you can find out when your card stops working from your agreement.
Note.
It is worth noting that only the physical medium has an expiration date. If for some reason you do not manage to reissue the card, you will still retain access to your account. Any operations with funds will be unavailable to you, but if necessary, you can withdraw them through the bank's cash desks. Therefore, you can rest easy if your Sberbank card has expired and the money remains in the account — you will be able to use it later when you reissue the plastic.

Automatic card reissuance upon expiration
Automatic card reissuance is only possible if its expiration date has been reached. Moreover, the bank will notify you itself of the need to receive a new card.
Automatic reissuance occurs as follows:
- A couple of months before the old card expires, the bank will issue a new one and send it to the bank branch where you signed the initial agreement.
- As soon as the card is ready for pickup, Sberbank will send a notification about the need to collect it from the branch.
- As soon as the old card expires, its functionality will be restricted, and you will be able to use the new card.
Can you opt out of automatic card reissuance?

If you do not need a new card and do not intend to use the card account in the future, you can simply not pick it up at the bank branch. In this case, you will need to submit an application to close the account. You can do this at a Sberbank branch or in the mobile application.
Note.
If you want to refuse a credit card, you will first need to pay off your debt to the bank.
What to do with an invalid card
Many sources state that you must return your old card to the bank for disposal. In reality, Sberbank does not require clients to present their old card. You can simply cut it up at home and throw it in the trash.
What is required to reissue a card
If the reissue is automatic, you will not need to submit an application—the bank will do it for you. You will just need to visit a Sberbank branch with your passport to pick up your new card.
How much will automatic reissuance cost
If you are replacing your card due to expiration, the bank will not charge you for the service. The cost of an unscheduled reissue depends on your tariff plan, but it is typically 299 RUB.
How to reissue a card yourself
You can also order a card reissue yourself—for example, if your previous card was lost or damaged. To do this, you will need to:

- Order a new card. You can do this in your Sberbank Online account or mobile app. On the main screen, select the payment method you need and click "Reissue".
- Block your old card. You can do this in the same place by clicking the "Block" button.
Once the card is ready (approximately 7-10 days after submitting your application), the bank will notify you via SMS. You will need to visit a branch with your passport. Please note that in this case, you will need to set a new PIN, as the card reissue is unscheduled.
If you notice your card is missing, do not wait until its expiration date—fraudsters will have plenty of time to use your money. Block the payment method, contact the bank, and report the loss.
