Cashless payment methods are gradually replacing physical money. Plastic cards are convenient and secure. The chances of funds disappearing from the account are reduced to a minimum. Payment cards have reliable protection that is not so easy for fraudsters to crack. A credit or debit card can be blocked in case of theft, keeping your money safe. Every payment tool has a digital combination on the front side that encodes many banking secrets. For example, it helps find out which bank owns the card if its number starts with 5469.

How to determine the bank by the card code

"Proverit-kartu.rf" and "Pokupnoy.rf" are services that help you find out which bank issued a card in just a few minutes. Enter the first 6 digits in the special box and click the "Search" button.

Information we received about the card:

  • BIN: 546969
  • Payment system: MASTERCARD
  • Country: Russia
  • Issued by bank: Sberbank
  • Bank website: www.sberbank.com

Based on this information, we can understand that the issuing bank of the plastic product is Sberbank (Russia), and the card is serviced by MASTERCARD, a payment system with innovative technologies for securing payments worldwide.

If the first digit is not "5" but "3", it means the payment tool is serviced by the American Express system; "4" stands for VISA. The number "2" indicates that the plastic card belongs to the MIR system, which appeared on the market in 2014 after the introduction of sanctions.

Did you know? Cards are issued not only by credit institutions. If you see the number "1" or "2" on the plastic card, it belongs to various airlines; the first digit "3" indicates that the card was issued by travel and entertainment organizations. Payment tools are also issued by merchandising and fuel companies, as well as telecommunications enterprises.

The credit institution that issued the payment tool can be identified by the logo, which is usually located on the front side in the left or right corner.

Is it possible to determine the region by card

The location of the bank that issued the credit or debit card is not essential information, so it is not encrypted in the digital code. It is impossible to find out the address of the financial institution using the card details.

The region is determined by the bank account, which consists of 20 digits. You can find the necessary information in several ways:

  • at the financial institution;
  • via an ATM or terminal;
  • in the official smartphone application;
  • in the agreement;
  • by calling the hotline phone number.

When contacting the hotline, be prepared to answer security questions, such as your mother's maiden name.

What information the card number contains

A bank card is a plastic product of standard or original design. The digital combination encodes the card type, payment system, and the name of the organization that issued the payment tool.

Other information is also indicated on the plastic card:

  • Cardholder's name.

The name is applied only to the front side of the card in Latin characters and does not overlap with other elements, but this information is not present on all cards. The bank also issues nameless cards. Whether there is a name or not, it does not affect the solvency of the payment tool.

  • Electronic chip.

By law, since 2015, all financial institutions in Russia are required to equip payment tools with chips. The contact pad comes in two colors: silver or gold. Since the chip is a complex microcircuit that is difficult to hack, the plastic card receives additional protection. If you do not keep the payment card near constantly operating electrical appliances, it will not demagnetize.

  • Expiration date.

The card expiration date is indicated on the front side in MM/YY format (2 digits of the month / last 2 digits of the year). If the card shows the date 05/22, it means its validity expires in May 2022. To continue using the payment tool, it must be reissued.

  • CVV2 or CVC2.

Security codes are located on the back side. This is confidential information, so it must not be disclosed to third parties.

  • Cardholder's signature.

Plastic cards with the owner's signature are better protected against fraudsters. Even if they manage to get hold of the plastic card, their signature is unlikely to match yours.

  • Hologram.

The hologram protects the banking product from counterfeiting. It is placed on only one side: the front or the back.

  • Photograph.

This is an optional card element. It may be placed on the back and/or front.

  • Banking details.

If you need to contact a representative of a financial organization urgently, you don't need to rack your brains trying to remember the number — it is listed at the bottom on the back of the payment card.

What is a card BIN and where is it used

Bank Identification Number (BIN) is the first 6 digits of a bank card. It is used to identify the bank within the card payment system during authorization, processing, and clearing.

During banking operations, user identification takes place. A card reader reads the necessary information encrypted in the chip and magnetic stripe, which is used to transmit data according to various details. This also includes the first 6 digits (BIN). To minimize fraud and speed up data processing, transactions are tracked by payment instrument type, card type, and cardholder.

By the way, just a few years ago it was impossible to determine the Bank Identification Number. With the advent of special services, this can be done from anywhere, as long as you have an electronic device and internet access.

An average user does not need to know the BIN, except perhaps to calculate the commission when transferring money to the accounts of other financial institutions. The bank BIN is primarily needed by payment systems and financial institutions.

Did you know? There are many cases where the BIN does not match the actual status of the card. Reasons: the plastic card was issued by another bank, the type of banking product does not match the actual type (platinum, gold), or a card issued in the Russian Federation is considered foreign because the financial institution that issued the card is a branch of a bank from another country.

What information is encoded in the next 10 digits

Most cards consist of 16 digits, but there are payment instruments with 13 or 18 digits. With a card whose code consists of 18 digits, problems may arise when making payments abroad — foreign systems cannot read a code with 18 digits.

As we have already found out, the first 6 digits are the BIN. What secrets do the remaining 10 digits hold? Let's talk about that.

Digits 7 and 8 indicate the banking institution's program within which the payment instrument was issued.

Digits 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 are a unique combination that encodes information about the bank code, chip technology, and currency.

Note! The digital sequence is not sequential. It is determined by a special algorithm. The probability of digits matching on two cards is negligibly small.

Digit 16 is a check digit calculated using the Luhn algorithm. Thanks to this digit, errors when entering a card number manually can be prevented.

Why a card number might be needed

While withdrawing cash at a terminal is possible without the digital combination because the necessary information is on the magnetic stripe, certain banking operations cannot be performed without knowing the card number.

  •  Transferring money from one card to another, both within the same financial institution and between separate banks.
  • Paying for goods and services using online stores (services). Since many cards do not support 3-D Secure technology, you need to enter not only the 16 digits, but also the cardholder's first and last name, expiration date, and code.
  • When communicating with a bank employee. There are situations when you cannot get the required information without dictating the digital combination to the operator.

Please note! When reissuing a card due to loss or theft, the number changes.

How to protect yourself from fraudsters

Financial literacy is something that is not taught in school. And that's a pity. Financially illiterate people often get into various troubles involving money and cards.

To minimize trouble, follow our tips.

  • Never withdraw money at ATMs located in strange places. They may be equipped with fraudulent devices (skimmers) that allow card data to be read.
  • If you use your card frequently, set a daily limit. In case the plastic card is stolen, fraudsters will not be able to withdraw more than the set amount.
  • When buying goods online, use a store that supports the 3D Secure/SecureCode system. Once the system redirects you to the bank's official website, you can confirm your wish to purchase the item by entering a password.
  • If possible, use a separate payment card for online shopping. For example, you can deposit the required amount onto it once a week.

Note! Virtual cards are in high demand now. You won't be able to pay with one in a regular store, but they are just right for online stores.

  • When paying for goods in a store or lunch at a restaurant, never let your card out of sight. Do not hand the plastic card over to the waiter; ask them to bring the terminal—today that is not a problem.
  • Write down the bank's hotline phone number in your notebook just in case. If the card is stolen, you can block it immediately.
  • You shouldn't take your card with you if you don't plan to buy goods or pay for services.

They say for a reason: "Forewarned is forearmed." "Arm" yourself with our tips, and you will manage to protect your payment instrument from fraudsters.
