How to determine the bank by the card code

To determine which bank payment instrument 4890 belongs to, use special services. For example, the "проверить-карту.рф" service. Enter the first 6 digits in the box and click the "Check card" button. The system will display the results:

  • BIN: 489049
  • Payment system: VISA
  • Plastic type: DEBIT
  • Category: Classic
  • Country: Russia
  • Issuing bank: QIWI BANK (JSC)
  • Bank website: https://qiwi.com/bank/

We received the following information: the payment instrument whose number begins with 4890 (Bank Identification Number) belongs to Qiwi Bank. It belongs to the classic type and is serviced by the VISA payment system.

Note! Since Qiwi Bank is the issuing bank, it controls all transactions carried out using the card: withdrawals, deposits, etc.

What is a card BIN and where is it used

A bank card BIN is a 6-digit number that allows you to find out information about the plastic card. There are no cards with the same BIN anywhere in the world. For example, VTB24 has its own code — 427229 (visa el.); Russian Standard Bank — 513691 (momentum); Yandex.Money — 518901, and Tinkoff Bank — 521324 (Platinum, debit card).

Please note! If you have 3 or 4 cards whose numbers begin with 4890, it means all payment instruments belong to the same financial organization — Qiwi Bank.

If you use plastic for online shopping, earning interest, or simply receiving your salary, you are unlikely to need the card's BIN. It is not requested when making transfers either. The Bank Identification Number may be needed if the front of the plastic card does not display the financial organization's logo, and you do not know which bank's card funds will be credited to when making transfers. You need to have this information to save money. Within a single financial enterprise, transfers can be sent for free. If a transfer is made between two credit institutions, a fee is charged for the operation. The amount is set by each bank individually.

Let's figure out what the first 6 digits on the front of the plastic card mean.

The first digit indicates the payment system the banking product belongs to. If the first number is 4 — VISA; 3 — American Express; 5 — MasterCard.

The second, third, and fourth digits are the generated code of the financial institution that provided the plastic card.

The fifth and sixth numbers further identify the credit institution.

What information is encoded in the next 10 digits

A standard bank card consists of 16 digits. The format of the digital combination is determined by the ISO 7812 international standard. The first group of digits, as we wrote above, consists of 6 numbers and is the bank identifier.

The last 10 numbers also hold banking secrets.

Digits 7 – 8 specify the program of the banking institution within which the payment instrument was issued. This exhausts the standard components of the plastic card.

Digits 9 – 15 are unique. They are generated randomly using an algorithm. These digits encode information about the currency, the code of the banking institution, chip integration, etc.

16 is a check digit determined using a special algorithm. It is this number that allows you to determine the "correctness" of the plastic card number.

Did you know? You can find plastic payment cards whose digital combination consists of 13 or 18 digits.

What information the number carries

A bank card is a plastic banking product the size of a business card. The standard size of a payment instrument is 5 x 8 centimeters. It can have either a classic design or an original one. A background image can be a nice photo or another picture. The main thing is not to violate copyright.

By the way, a small fee is charged for issuing a uniquely designed card.

By examining the payment instrument code, you will learn the maximum amount of information about the product:

  • card type;
  •  payment system;
  • name of the organization that owns the card.

The card also contains other information:

  •  payment system logo;

In addition to the payment system logo, the partner company logo may also be indicated.

  • holder's name (unnamed cards exist);
  •  product expiration date;

Each bank card has an expiration date, usually from 1 to 5 years. The expiration year and month are indicated on the front side. If the card says 05/21, it means that at the end of May 2021 it will be invalid and needs to be reissued.

  • chip;

Thanks to the built-in microprocessor, you will find out the necessary information about the owner of the bank product and the card. The chip helps identify the customer when they use terminals or ATMs.

  • bank name;
  •  signature strip;
  • magnetic stripe;

The stripe, like the chip, contains information about the cardholder.

Note! Plastic payment instruments require proper handling. If heated or stored near operating electrical appliances, the payment instrument may become demagnetized.

  •  signature verification code;

CVV (Card Verification Value) or CVC (Card Validation Code) is needed if you purchase goods online.

  •  payment system hologram;
  • bank details.

If you memorize or write down the information regarding the bank, in case of card loss or other force majeure situations related to the card, you can call the specified phone number.

Is it possible to determine the region by card

It is not possible to determine the region of the bank that issued the payment instrument from the card number. This information is encrypted in the bank account number.

The card account number refers to the account in a financial institution where the customer's funds are stored and to which all payment cards are "linked". While the payment instrument code consists of 16 digits (standard), the account number consists of 20 digits, which cannot be seen on the front or back of the card.

The account number is needed when transferring funds to legal entities and when executing certain types of bank transfers.

You can find out the account details in several ways:

  • Check the agreement (one copy always remains with the customer).
  • In the envelope with the PIN code.
  • Using mobile banking.
  • Through online banking.
  • ATMs and terminals. During banking operations, you can see the account number from which the payment will be made on the screen.

By the way, some ATMs allow you to print bank account details.

  • At the bank. You will need an identity document and the payment instrument.
  • By calling the hotline. You will need to answer security questions.

Why you might need the number

Online shopping is in demand today. Everything from pencils and pens to expensive equipment is bought on the internet. To carry out financial transactions, you need the digital combination indicated on the front of the card. In addition, you need to specify the last and first name of the payment instrument holder, the card's expiration date, and the code (CVV2 or CVC2). To complete the transaction, you need to enter the secret code sent by the seller to the specified phone number.

Please note! The validity period of the code is often limited.

Also, the digital combination will be needed when transferring money from one card to another (to relatives, acquaintances).

If you are withdrawing cash using a terminal, the system does not request the digital combination. The necessary information is indicated on the magnetic stripe or chip.

How to protect yourself from fraudsters

Fraud prevention methods in payment systems are constantly being improved, so today stealing funds from a card is difficult, but possible.

Follow our advice, and the chances of running into fraudsters will be reduced to a minimum.

  • Just in case, write down the card details and the customer service center phone number and store this information separately. In case of theft, you can call a specialist and immediately block the card.
  • When changing the PIN code (if the bank allows it), come up with a complex combination.
  • It is better to memorize the PIN code rather than write it down.
  • When paying for goods in stores or services in other establishments, do not let the payment card out of your sight. One minute is enough to take a photo of the plastic card.
  • Keep track of your account statements.
  • Having only the 16-digit number, fraudsters are unlikely to be able to carry out any transaction, but you should not give it out to everyone.
  • When making transactions in a store, do not share additional information. Just one number is enough to pay for a purchase.
  • You should not take your card with you if you do not plan to use it.

Internet technologies are developing, and today gathering the necessary information is a matter of 20 to 30 minutes. However, each of us must make every effort to ensure that the information we leave on social networks and other resources does not cause harm.
