Attractive debit cards with interest on balance
How debit cards with interest on balance work
Each debit card has its own loyalty programs designed to generate profit from the banking product. The working principle of free debit cards with interest on balance can be compared to opening a deposit account. However, in this situation, the card account holder uses their own funds, and unlike a bank deposit, there are no restrictions. Bank deposits can be non-replenishable and non-withdrawable, whereas debit cards allow for top-ups, withdrawals, and additional dividend earnings. Furthermore, bank deposits have a significant restriction: the impossibility of changing the interest rate. Debit cards can increase their interest rate, and the owner of the banking product might not even be aware of this unless they check online banking or visit a bank branch, where they may be informed about changes to the terms of use for the debit card with interest on balance.
The classic scheme for applying interest on the account is as follows:
- During the card issuance process, the bank sets a specific day of the month when accruals will be made, for example, the 15th of each month.
- The bank independently sets the interest rate, while some credit institutions offer a maximum interest rate of 10%.
- As of the reporting date for calculating interest on the balance, the bank applies the classic annual calculation scheme based on 1/12.
- The income is credited to the cardholder, who can use the funds at their discretion without any restrictions.
This scheme is convenient for cardholders because they can use the residual principle to calculate approximate income for a period, which is typically equal to 1 calendar month. If the interest rate on the balance depends on the amount of funds spent, the accrual procedure is carried out differently. In this case, the card limit principle applies. The limit is a conditional amount up to which interest can be accrued on existing balances. In most cases, this threshold is 300,000 RUB. That is, if the balance exceeds this amount, the entire remaining amount is taken into conditional calculation.
An equally interesting requirement for the card is the turnover condition, while maintaining the required limit threshold. This means that if you had card turnover during the month and managed to meet the limit requirements, you are credited with the interest rate. If you fail to meet these stated requirements, the bank will not accrue interest, and a monthly fee equivalent to a portion of the debit card's annual maintenance will also be charged.
The most common scheme for calculating interest on balances (classic):
- Balance of 100,000 RUB – 1% accrual.
- Balance of 200,000 RUB – 2% rate.
- Balance of 300,000 RUB – up to 3% interest accrual.
A mixed system of card turnover and maintaining a balance is also used by some banks. For instance, a bank may require a minimum balance of 100,000 RUB, but with a turnover of approximately 10,000-15,000 RUB, no less. In this case, you are guaranteed to receive your interest on the existing balances.
Options for balances on debit cards can be activated independently or used by the bank by default in the banking software product.

Some clients who skillfully and correctly manage interest and cash turnover can receive up to 10% on their existing card account balance. In addition, the cardholder loyalty framework includes participation in a cashback program.
Debit cards with interest on balance from Sberbank
Every bank has its attractive programs, and Sberbank is no exception. Holders of the "MIR Pension Debit" card get a unique opportunity: Sberbank accrues up to 3.5% per annum on the balance. The accrual amount is small, but Sberbank does not impose strict turnover or balance requirements for this product; interest is calculated based on the actual status of the card account.
Debit cards with interest on balance from Alfa-Bank
The commercial bank has several attractive debit card software products, and the "Income Card" is one of them. Debit card holders can receive up to 0% on their account balance. The bank has requirements for calculation using the residual principle on the 1st of each month. For example, if you had a balance of 60,000 RUB on September 1, and on the 7th your balance, taking into account expenses, was 30,000 RUB, then on September 15 the balance was topped up again and amounted to 55,000 RUB. Consequently, interest on the balance will be accrued only on the amount of 30,000 RUB.

Please note that cashback terms apply to almost all credit institutions, while turnover and balance requirements vary for each bank.

Remember that if cashback is awarded as bonuses—which in some cases cannot be converted into real money and can only be used for specific purposes—interest is real physical money that can be spent without any volume or turnover restrictions. Cashback bonuses sometimes cannot be used until a certain time, whereas interest on the balance is spent at your discretion for any purpose. You can use it for purchases or keep it in the account, where new interest on the existing balance will be accrued in the next billing period.
