How to determine the bank by the card code

Card numbering is applied in two ways: standard and embossing.

On some cards, the number is not 16 digits (four groups of four characters), but 18 digits, which creates problems when conducting settlement operations abroad. The reason is that foreign systems are unable to read information encoded in 18 digits.

Good to know! Payment instruments with a 13-digit number are still in circulation today. First came a group of four digits, followed by three groups of three characters each.

Regardless of how many digits are on the plastic, a card's affiliation with a financial institution is determined using the same methods. The easiest way is to use special services that will provide the required information after entering the bank identifier.

What information the card number contains

To get the necessary information, we went to the website card2.ru. To find out which bank issued the card, we simply entered the first 6 digits into the box and clicked the virtual "Find bank" button.

The system provided us with the following information:

  • BIN: 220220
  • Payment system: NSPK MIR
  • Card type: DEBIT
  • Card category: Classic
  • Country: Russia
  • Issued by bank: Sberbank
  • Bank website: www.sberbank.com

We can see that the card starting with 2202 belongs to the national Russian payment system MIR, which was established in 2014. This is not a credit card, but a classic debit card from Sberbank.

To identify the bank that issued the plastic card, it is enough to look at its design. The logo of the financial institution is usually printed on the payment instrument and placed in the left or right corner.

In addition to the logo, personalized cards show the owner's first and last name, expiration date, and the last 4 digits required for banking operations.

What information is encoded in the next 10 digits

The Bank Identification Number (BIN) includes the first 6 digits. For the financial organization that issued the card, this is the same for all types and categories. Digits 7 through 15 are the bank product identifier. This is where the client number, service terms, and specific information such as the issuing branch are hidden. Since these numbers are secret, the bank hides them from prying eyes.

The 16th digit is the check digit. To calculate it, a special Luhn algorithm is used.

Note! The algorithm patented by Hans Luhn in 1960 is used not only to calculate the check digit for bank cards. It is applied to some discount cards, social security numbers, and even SIM card serial numbers.

In services where a bank card is used, the check digit allows you to determine whether such a card actually exists. If you make a mistake in at least one digit when entering the card details, the system will block the transfer and your money will remain with you.

What is a card BIN and where is it used

BIN (Bank Identification Number) is a special number that provides complete information about a bank product. There are no cards whose number does not include a BIN. However, it is the first six digits that provide the maximum amount of information about the card.

Cards from Alfa-Bank, Russian Agricultural Bank, and other banks have their own BIN. If the number starts with 2202, it means it was issued by Sberbank of Russia.

It is hard to say whether plastic cardholders need information about BINs, since this number is not publicly available. That is, when performing financial transactions, you are never separately required to enter a six-digit number. But (!) armed with this information, when transferring money from one card to another, you can calculate the commission fee in advance if the money is transferred to a payment instrument of another financial institution.

Is it possible to determine the region by card

Information can be found online stating that the card can be used to determine the region where it was issued. This view is incorrect. In the 16-digit number of a card issued by Sberbank, the region is not encoded for the reason that the head organization is always the issuer of the bank cards.

Most likely, users do not understand the difference between the card number and the account number, and confuse them. It is the account number that contains encoded information about the location of the branch that issued the bank card.

The account number is not indicated on the payment instrument and consists of 20 digits. It is used for certain types of transfers both within the bank where the client is served and between different financial institutions. The card account is needed to transfer funds to legal entities. Regardless of whether the card was replaced or lost, the account number remains the same.

The card account number can be found in various ways:

  • in the agreement (one copy always remains with the client);
  • in the envelope with the PIN code;
  • in mobile banking;
  • in internet banking;
  • when conducting banking operations using terminals;
  • at the bank branch;
  • from a technical support employee by calling the hotline phone number.

What is a card number needed for

Knowing the card number, you can make various purchases in online stores and pay for services. The details are needed to transfer money to a relative or acquaintance. The code will be required to have access to all the money.

To carry out a financial transaction, other information is also needed:

  • the full name of the bank product owner;
  • the plastic card's expiration date;
  • the number;
  • the CVV2 or CVC2 security code located on the back.

To complete the transaction, you will need to enter the code that arrives at the specified phone number as an SMS message.

Please note! When contacting Sberbank to clarify important information, the institution's teller may also request the digital combination.

Some cardholders do not state the number because they are afraid of fraudsters. In some cases, such fears are justified. While some stores request maximum information to carry out a transaction (security code, card expiration date, SMS code), others do not need a one-time password and CVC code. To purchase goods, the cardholder's name, number, and expiration date are sufficient. One such store is Amazon.

Knowing the card details (number, full name, expiration date, security code), an attacker can perform a number of actions:

  • make payments for purchases made in online stores;
  • book hotel rooms;
  • rent vehicles;
  • link the payment instrument to Google Play.

If the fraudster also gets hold of the SMS code, they will be able to use your card as their own plastic card.

Please note! Knowing your phone number and the 16-digit combination, a fraudster can impersonate a bank employee, call you, and 'fish out' the necessary information. Be careful.

How to protect yourself from fraudsters

A plastic card is a good thing, but you need to know how to use it and how to protect yourself from fraudsters. Despite the fact that you can "look up" a bank product's BIN on the internet and find out which financial institution it belongs to in 2 minutes, such information is not enough to carry out fraudulent activities.

What you need to know to avoid falling for fraudsters' tricks — let's talk about that.

  • The card was left in a cafe, and you retrieved it 15 minutes later.

A dishonest waiter can immediately write down the details in a notebook or simply take a photo of the card. If you make small purchases infrequently, neither you nor the bank may notice the disappearance of the money. To avoid taking risks, it is better to block the card and order a reissue.

Good to know! After reissuing the payment instrument, the BIN will remain the same, but the rest of the digits will be different.

  • An employee of the institution took the card and walked away with it for a few minutes to process the transaction at the cash register.

To pay for goods in an online store or carry out other fraudulent operations, 2 to 3 minutes are enough. A card is a tool that should not fall into third-party hands. Go with the employee to the cash register or ask them to bring the terminal.

  • They ask you to send a screenshot of the card. For example, to book a hotel room.

There is nothing terrible about such a request, but it is best to play it safe. For such operations, it is better to use a "backup" card with a minimum amount of funds in the account.

  • An acquaintance called and asked for a photo of the card to transfer funds.

Do not give out photos of your payment instrument left and right. Just the number is enough to transfer money.

Good to know! Trying to protect the card from fraudsters, some owners simply erase the security code from it. This is not recommended. When making offline transactions, a store employee has the right to refuse to accept this card.

To avoid falling into the hands of fraudsters, remember a couple of tips:

  • order a separate card for online shopping;
  • provide only the number for financial transactions;
  • The SMS code is secret information, so never share it with anyone;
  • if the card has fallen into the hands of third parties or been left unattended for even a few minutes, block it and order a reissue.

Armed with this information, you will be able to determine which bank the card belongs to and protect it from fraudsters.
