Criminal liability for unlawful debt collectors
Liability for debt collectors for breaking the law
Under the new amendments, debt collectors who threaten debtors with property damage or violence, or who blackmail citizens by spreading knowingly false information, will be held criminally liable.
Violations of the law will be punishable by a fine of 300,000 to 500,000 RUB, up to five years of forced labor, or imprisonment for the same term.
Committing such acts as a group by prior conspiracy, involving violence without threat to the debtor's life or large-scale property damage, is punishable by three to seven years of imprisonment and a fine of 500,000 to 1,000,000 RUB.
Committing the same acts as an organized group, involving violence with a threat to the debtor's life or large-scale property damage, is punishable by five to ten years of imprisonment and a fine of 1,000,000 to 5,000,000 RUB.
