AllSome banks mention a profitable interest rate on the account balance in their debit card ads. Let's talk about what this is, under what conditions it is accrued, and how cards with interest differ from a regular deposit.
What is interest on account balance on a card?
Interest on account balance is a reward for the cardholder meeting certain conditions: maintaining a minimum required amount in the account, making the required number of purchases per month, and receiving regular deposits to the card.
At the same time, such cards are no different from regular ones. You can use them to pay for purchases online and in stores, withdraw cash, transfer money to other people, pay for utilities, mobile communications, internet, and so on.
The only difference is that such cards provide interest on the minimum balance.

How do banks accrue interest on the account balance of a debit card?
Banks accrue interest on the card's balance using one of the following schemes:
- On the minimum amount for the month. Here is an example. For 28 days, the cardholder kept at least 100 thousand rubles in the account. And on the 29th day, they withdrew 85 thousand rubles. At the end of the month, they will receive interest on the balance based on 15 thousand rubles. At the same time, it does not really matter how long the person withdraws this money — even if they return the funds to the account within a few minutes, the bank will accrue interest on the minimum amount for the month.
- On the average amount for the month. In this case, the bank will record the balance at the beginning of each day of the reporting period. And at the end of the month, it will add up the results and divide by the number of days.
- On the daily amount. As in the previous case, the bank will record the balance in the account every day. But it will calculate the interest on the balance not at the end of the month, but immediately. To do this, it will divide the annual interest rate by 365 days and multiply by the amount on the card account balance.
Most banks do not accrue interest on the balance just like that. Usually, to receive it, the cardholder must follow certain conditions:
- Maintain a minimum balance on the card account. For example, Gazprombank accrues interest on the Smart Mir Card if the amount on it is at least 30 thousand rubles.
- Make purchases for a certain amount per month. For example, Tinkoff Bank accrues interest on the balance of the Tinkoff Black card if a person makes purchases for a total of at least 3 thousand rubles per month. And Sovcombank provides the most favorable conditions for cardholders who pay with the card at least 5 times during the reporting period for a total amount of at least 10 thousand rubles.
- Receive deposits of a certain amount per month. Some banks accrue interest on the balance only if the cardholder receives wages, social benefits, or a pension of a certain amount. For example, at least 18 thousand rubles per month.
- Subscribe to a paid subscription or service. Here is an example. Tinkoff Bank accrues interest on the balance when subscribing to Tinkoff Pro. Gazprombank — when connecting the Gazprombank Privileges service. And Sovcombank offers favorable terms with the Halva.Desyatka subscription.
How does interest on account balance differ from a deposit?
Despite the fact that a deposit and a card with interest on the balance are intended to generate a small income from savings, they have many differences:
- Cash withdrawal restrictions. Most banks do not allow withdrawing money from a deposit until its maturity. Even partial withdrawal of funds leads to recalculation of interest at the "on-demand" rate. Usually, it is 0.01% per annum. You can withdraw money from the card at any time. The interest rate remains unchanged. However, keep in mind that most banks accrue interest on the minimum balance.
- Interest payout. In the case of a deposit, this happens at the end of the agreement term. Banks accrue income on the card every month.
- Replenishment restrictions. Some banks do not allow replenishing a deposit even by 1 thousand rubles. Some credit institutions have a minimum amount that must be deposited into the deposit. You can replenish a debit card at any time without losing the interest rate.
- Interest rate change. For a deposit, it is fixed for the entire term of the agreement — the yield will not change even if the Central Bank's key rate drops. As for a debit card, the bank can change the yield on it at any time unilaterally. At the same time, the credit institution is not obligated to notify cardholders about changes in terms. Therefore, you need to track the current interest rate yourself.
- Time limit. You can open a deposit only for a specific period. For example, for 3 months or 1 year. You can keep money on a debit card indefinitely. That means you can withdraw it on any convenient day.
