What is a bank card ZIP code

A bank card ZIP code is a code that encrypts the cardholder's residential address. Russian online stores very rarely require filling out this detail when making purchases, so we practically never encounter it in everyday life.

However, foreign shopping sites, particularly American ones, use the bank card ZIP code for additional buyer identification, serving as an extra security measure. There, clients undergo identification through the Address Verification Service, which checks that the information provided when obtaining the card matches the data entered in the form during online payment.

How to find your card's ZIP code

A bank card ZIP code is an encrypted code. It is not displayed on the card itself or in online banking in any way. Furthermore, bank employees are not authorized to provide this information. By the way, the cardholder does not need this data either, so if someone asks you for your bank card ZIP code, you can be sure you are dealing with scammers.

Details for online payments

First, let's talk about what details are required when filling out an application for online purchases in Russian online stores. The cardholder is required to provide the following information:

  1. The cardholder's first and last name. They must be written exactly as they appear on the plastic card—that is, in Latin letters.
  2. Bank card number — a 16-digit numerical code embossed on the front of the product.
  3. Card validity period. It looks like this: for example, 12/21, where 12 is the month number and 21 is the card expiration year.
  4. CVV/CVC code — a three-digit combination indicated on the back of the card.

Making online purchases does not even require the PIN code that we enter when paying with a card in regular stores. Sometimes, if provided by the bank, confirming a purchase requires entering a client code sent to the cardholder via SMS. However, this system does not always operate, so someone who illegally acquires the card can use it for their own purposes without the cardholder's knowledge.

For this reason, foreign sites conduct additional identification of their clients using the following details:

  1. Postal Code — a numerical or alphanumeric code representing the postal index of the residential address.
  2. Billing Address — the cardholder's residential address.

Where to find the account number

Sometimes when filling out payment details, the seller's system also requires a current account number. It looks like a 20-digit numerical code. You can find it in the following ways:

  • in the bank agreement for account maintenance or card issuance;
  • by calling the bank's hotline;
  • by contacting an office of the organization with an identity document;
  • at ATMs under the "My Accounts" or "Card Information" tab;
  • in mobile banking under the "Card Information" tab.

Filling out Billing Address and Postal Code

When filling out these details, it is important to provide accurate information because if the data does not match reality, the seller may decline the buyer's payment for subsequent purchases.

When filling out the Postal Code, you must enter the postal index. When filling out the Billing Address, you must enter the actual residential or registration address in the following order: city, street, house number, building and block number, apartment number.

What is especially important: all details must be written in Russian, but using Latin letters. That is, the buyer is not required to translate, for example, the street name into English. For simplicity, you can use special transliteration services (Translit-online, Transliter.ru).

Features of verifying Russian buyers' addresses

Although the Russian banking system does not use postal codes and billing addresses for customer registration, Russian buyers are identified as follows:

  1. Through periodic reconciliation of the data provided by the customer during online purchases.
  2. By cross-checking the entered details with, for example, the address indicated on the payment order for utility bills.
  3. The seller can verify the accuracy of the provided data by contacting the issuing bank that issued the card.

Foreign online stores rarely decline payments from Russian buyers because they are familiar with the features of our banking system and do not want to lose customers. However, please note that all data you enter into the payment form is stored in the stores' internal databases and may be used in the event of disputes.

Online payment security

Card Payment Security

When using a card for online purchases, it is important to follow security measures that help protect against unauthorized acquisition of card data. To avoid compromising your personal data, pay attention to the following points:

  1. Never and under no circumstances disclose the CVV/CVC code indicated on the back of the card. It is also not recommended to save it in cloud services or on a computer.
  2. Do not disclose personal card details to third parties, even if you receive a call from a bank employee. There is a high probability that database information has been leaked and you are talking to fraudsters.
  3. Do not transfer your card to other people — all operations involving it, including store payments, must be carried out personally by you.

Troubleshooting when filling out payment details

Sometimes it happens that a customer has entered all details, but the seller's system persistently declines the payment. This can happen for the following reasons:

  • due to incorrectly entered data (for example, an error in names or numbers);
  • if there are extra spaces;
  • the address specified when filling out the form does not match the address provided when obtaining the bank card.

Therefore, if you encounter problems paying for goods on a foreign website, the only way is to check the correctness of the entered data.

Conclusion

The bank card postal code is not a mandatory detail for paying for purchases in online stores. However, if you are a frequent buyer, we recommend providing this information to further protect the card from unauthorized access by third parties.
