How to return money sent via SberBank?
When a transfer cancellation is required

A person wants to transfer a certain amount or top up a mobile phone account, but when filling in the details, despite the app's request to check them, they make a mistake. As a result, the money does not reach its destination or ends up in someone else's account.
If there is an error in the recipient's details and such an account does not exist in the banking system, the amount will be frozen on a special bank account. An automatic refund to the client's account will be made within 10 business days.
The user who noticed their mistake must react immediately. The banking system cannot recognize which transaction is correct and which is erroneous in all cases. The probability of a refund depends on the cardholder. Let's look at what can be done in specific cases.
Payment status – Processing
The status of an online payment made in Sberbank can be checked in your personal account. The user simply logs into the system with their credentials and views the transaction history. It displays all payments and transfers. Next, you should click on the payment of interest, view the details, and pay attention to the transfer status. If the payment is listed as "in processing," the erroneous transfer can be cancelled in the following ways:
- call Sberbank or visit in person;
- complete identity verification;
- ask the operator to cancel the completed transaction.
Note that it is not always possible to use this payment cancellation option. The fact is that most payments in the online system are carried out instantly, and only in some cases does the operation take up to 3 days.
If the client manages to contact the bank before the payment goes through the processing stage, the money will be returned back to the account. The main condition is that the transaction must not violate the rights of third parties. If the client cancels payment for received Products or services, such actions will be considered fraud.

Payment status – Completed
Sberbank states that a confirmed and completed transaction cannot be cancelled. By entering a one-time code, the client confirms the correctness of the data and consents to their processing and the execution of the transfer.
If the completed status is displayed next to the transaction, bank employees cannot help the client get their money back in any way. The credit institution has no right to debit funds from the client's accounts without a corresponding court decision.
The user agreement states regarding this matter that if an accidental transfer is sent, you should contact the recipient via the internal online chat, by phone number, or in any messenger.
The outcome of the situation depends on whether the recipient wants to return the funds credited as a result of the erroneous transaction. The credit institution itself cannot influence this process.
If the payment recipient is unknown
In a number of cases, the recipient remains unknown after the transfer is made. Only the card number will be displayed in the history, accordingly, it will not be possible to contact the recipient. The client who made the erroneous transfer should visit the bank and write an application in the form of a request. Next, an official notification will be sent to the recipient.
Trying to find out any information about another client at the bank is pointless. Employees do not have the right to disclose confidential information.
Erroneous auto-payment
Auto-payment is a convenient option that allows the system to regularly debit funds for goods or services without the client's participation. No confirmation is required to complete the operation. The client sets up confirmation once, and payments are processed automatically until cancelled. Sberbank is not responsible for such transactions. If an erroneous auto-payment is completed, it cannot be cancelled.
Payment for a good or service
If the purpose of the transfer is to pay for services or goods, you can get your money back through the chargeback procedure. This transaction is performed not by the issuing bank, but by the payment system itself.
You can use the service in the following cases:
- the goods were not delivered or were delivered late;
- non-compliance with the description;
- the service was not provided in full;
- funds were mistakenly debited several times;
- the debiting occurred without confirmation;
- extra money was debited.
A refund of such a transfer is possible within 120 banking days.
What to do if someone else's money arrives on your card
If an erroneous transfer arrives, you should check whether the funds were actually credited to the account. Fraudsters often send out notifications about funds being credited, masking themselves as the official number of Sber, and then call with demands to return the funds.
If no requests for a refund are received and the funds have been credited, the details of the transaction should be clarified with the credit institution. An old debt or prepayment for an undelivered order may have been credited to the account.
According to the law, only the recipient can return an erroneous transfer to the sender, but there is no such option in the Sberbank personal account. To cancel the transaction, you need to contact the bank. The operator will draw up a request, assign it an incoming number, which can be used to monitor the status of execution.
The client will be informed about the refund decision via SMS. Next, the bank transfers the funds according to the sender's details. If the operation is not carried out, the client-recipient of the erroneous payment will receive documentary confirmation of their intentions to return the funds to the sender.
If you do not return the money to the sender

According to Article 1102 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation, the appropriation of someone else's funds can be considered unjust enrichment. If the erroneously sent amount was significant, a person can go to court and provide evidence of their mistake. The recipient will not be able to argue their actions and explain why they kept these funds for themselves.
Based on this, money sent via Sberbank can be returned, but it all depends on the recipient's willingness. If it is not possible to resolve the issue through the bank on a voluntary basis, the sender can go to court and resolve this issue in their favor.
