Installment cards with cashback – how to get money back for purchases
How an installment card with cashback works
To keep cardholders interested in their credit organization's offers, issuing banks develop loyalty programs that allow users to earn extra rewards on purchases. All installment cards include a credit facility from the issuing bank but may also hold personal funds. Banks grant cashback on purchases made with personal funds, both online (in internet stores) and in physical retail locations.
Since the Sovcombank Halva installment card with cashback is one of the most popular, the lender has developed special loyalty program conditions. The standard scheme used by credit institutions is as follows:
- Cashback is accrued in the form of bonus points.
- Some banks accrue cashback directly as monetary funds.
- Points can be converted, for example, at a rate of 1 point = 1 RUB; other conversion schemes may also apply.
- Points can be converted into real money or spent on specific purchase categories under the loyalty program.
Thus, installment cards with cashback can be viewed in two ways: as real money, or as an exchange for goods, services, and options provided by the credit institution.
The cashback accrual rate varies. For instance, if you buy an item worth 12,000 RUB and the cashback rate is 5%, you will receive the equivalent of 60 RUB, either in cash or converted to points. However, some lenders may set different criteria for cashback accrual, such as:
- A 1% cashback rate applies to all partner stores without exception.
- A 3–5% cashback rate applies only at partner stores.
- Super cashback of up to 35% is available only during promotional campaigns.
- To earn cashback, certain conditions must be met, such as spending 50,000 RUB per month on the card or buying at least 5 items totaling 10,000 RUB.
The cashback terms listed are approximate, as each issuing bank sets its own rules and criteria for returning funds via cashback.

Special rules for returning bonuses on installment cards with cashback
The principles described above apply to classic banking products like credit and debit cards. Installment cards follow similar accrual principles but have distinct features that cardholders should know:
- Enhanced cashback is available only at the issuing bank's partner stores.
- Rewards are issued either as points or as direct deposits to the card account.
- Banks set limits on cashback accrual for individual installment cards.
Note that cashback is returned only when using personal funds on the installment card. This rule does not apply to borrowed or credit funds due to the specific nature of the banking product.

How own funds are treated as an element of card account movement
Personal funds offer various benefits, including specific ones. To understand what constitutes personal funds, you must first review the card's tariff plan conditions.
- The borrower tops up the card account using any convenient method.
- After topping up, funds are directed toward repaying the principal loan according to the schedule.
- Any surplus funds remaining on the card after timely debt repayment are considered personal funds.
- The borrower may use personal funds for various purchases.
- Purchases made with personal funds qualify for cashback returns.
- The cashback percentage depends on the tariff plan conditions and the specific terms of the purchase at the issuing bank's partner store.
Another feature of installment cards holding personal funds is the ability to earn interest on the remaining balance. If you meet all financial obligations within a month, the issuing bank accrues annual interest on your formed personal fund balances.

Which installment cards offer cashback
It is worth noting that installment cards emerged as a standalone banking product relatively recently, in 2016. This was preceded by a major campaign to popularize the product among Russians. Currently, four types of installment cards are available, but only one offers an extensive loyalty program. Specifically, the Sovcombank Halva installment card with cashback includes the following conditions:
- When purchasing goods at a partner store using the physical card, 2% cashback is accrued.
- When paying via phone (with the card installed as an app), 6% cashback is accrued, but only at partner stores.
- Outside the partner network, whether using the physical card or phone, the cashback rate is 1%.
- There is unique cashback available through a special program, offering returns of up to 35% annually.
- Within one month, you can return no more than 5,000 points via cashback, equivalent to 5,000 RUB.
Currently, the list of partner stores for the Sovcombank Halva installment card with cashback exceeds 173,000.
Promotions, bonuses, and rules for using installments
Each year, installment cardholders with cashback can participate in various loyalty programs. As mentioned earlier, Halva offers Super Cashback of 35% once a year. Exact bonus accrual conditions are available on the issuing bank's official website. Additionally, there is currently a promotion for users who pay via phone as a payment instrument. During certain promo periods, returns of up to 12% are possible. This promotion existed until mid-2019, and it is expected that the issuing bank will continue offering attractive programs to borrowers.
Installment plans also have specific rules that must be followed. For example, suppose you buy a laptop costing 39,000 RUB from a partner store on September 20, with a 13-month installment plan. Starting from the second month, i.e., October 20, you must make equal monthly payments of 3,000 RUB. This means you repay the bank by the 20th of each month. However, if you bought the same laptop from a partner store using personal funds and paid via phone, the Halva installment card would return 2,340 RUB (6%) to you. Note that the bank requires at least one purchase per month, which you fulfilled.
If you had purchased the laptop using credit funds, the issuing bank would not accrue cashback, as borrowed funds are not eligible for purchase reward returns.
Our financial service comparison platform helps you choose favorable installment cards with good cashback rates. We invite you to visit the issuing bank's website, submit an application, and review the main terms of the loyalty programs. By making purchases with an installment card, you can return part of your spending to your card account. Please note that the maximum cashback amount is determined by the bank. For Halva, you can return no more than 5,000 points (equivalent to 5,000 RUB) per billing period. Online applications are processed instantly; you will receive a preliminary decision in about 7 minutes, after which an operator will contact you within an hour to clarify card collection details and state the available credit limit.
