What is a credit?

A credit is a type of economic relationship between two parties, one of which (the creditor) undertakes to provide funds in the amount and on the terms stipulated by the credit agreement. The second party (the borrower) undertakes to return the received amount and interest for its use within the agreed timeframe.

Depending on the object of lending, bank credits can be classified into:

  1. Credits for starting and developing a business.
  2. Mortgages, where the object is real estate – an apartment in a multi-family building, a private house, or a land plot for building a summer house.
  3. Auto loans. While in the previous case the object of lending was real estate, here it is a vehicle.
  4. Secured loans, where property acts as a guarantee that the borrower will repay the debt to the bank.
  5. Unsecured consumer loans. Most often, the borrowed funds are transferred to the borrower's account, less often they are issued in cash. They can be spent on any purpose, such as medical treatment, education, a major purchase, etc.
  6. Refinancing is taking out a new loan at another bank on more favorable terms to pay off debt to the current creditor, or consolidating multiple loans into one if you have borrowed from several organizations.
  7. Restructuring is the revision of terms for an existing credit to make debt repayment more comfortable.

What is a loan?

A loan is a financial obligation between two parties, one of which provides funds on the terms specified in the loan agreement, and the other party undertakes to return the money in the agreed amount and by the deadline.

A loan is essentially the same type of economic relationship as a credit. The mechanism of cooperation between a microfinance organization and a borrower is identical. Therefore, there is no fundamental difference between a credit and a microloan.

What is the difference between a credit and a loan?

We have covered the definitions of credit and loan. Now let's talk about their differences. For convenience, we will present this information in a comparison table.

Comparison parameters Loans Microcredits
Loan amount In banks, you can borrow any amount – you are practically not limited by caps. Without collateral, you can receive up to 5,000,000 RUB, and with security, up to 30,000,000 RUB. With microloans, you will rarely be able to get more than 30,000 RUB. Regular and responsible borrowers can count on amounts up to 100,000 RUB.
Loan term. With a bank loan, you can receive funds for a period of several years – from 1 to 30 years, depending on the type of loan. Microfinance organizations most often allow you to take out microloans for a period of 5 to 30 days. Less frequently, up to 180 days.
Interest rate. In the case of banks, it differs from the current Central Bank rate by only a few percentage points. The interest rate on a microloan is almost always at the maximum – up to 1% per day.

Advantages and disadvantages of credits

Let's start by listing the advantages:

  1. The main benefit of a loan is the ability to receive a large sum for a long period.
  2. The second advantage is relatively low interest rates.
  3. The ability to repay the debt early and save on interest.
  4. The ability to choose a bank with the most favorable terms for you.

Now let's talk about the disadvantages:

  1. To receive a large sum, you must verify your income and employment status one way or another.
  2. Long application processing time.
  3. A very high rejection rate.
  4. The inability to spend the money at your own discretion if the loan is purpose-specific.

Advantages and disadvantages of microloans

Now let's look at the advantages of microloans:

  1. Very fast application processing.
  2. High approval rate.
  3. No proof of income or employment required.
  4. The ability to receive money on weekends and holidays.

Let's move on to the disadvantages:

  1. Very high interest rates – up to 1% per day.
  2. Small loan limit.
  3. Very short loan term.
  4. Large penalties for late payments.

To summarize: both loans and microloans have their pros and cons. Which one should you choose? It depends on the borrower's specific goals. Microfinance organizations are suitable when you urgently need a small amount for a short period. Conversely, it is better to apply for a bank loan when you need a large sum with minimal interest over several years.
