A credit card is a very convenient payment tool. You can use it to pay for goods and services if you don't have enough money until payday. You can also use it to send money to other people and withdraw cash at ATMs and cash desks, if provided by the bank tariff. And for this, you don't even need to ask loved ones for help or take out a loan from an MFI. We will share what a credit card is and why it is needed, how it differs from a consumer loan, what is needed to issue it, and where you can apply for a credit card in 2024.

What is a credit card and how does it differ from a debit card

A credit card is a convenient payment tool. With its help, you can pay for purchases in retail stores and online, utility bills, mobile communications and the Internet, transfer money to other people, withdraw cash at ATMs and cash desks.

In general, you can do the same things with a credit card as with a debit card. But there is one difference: the credit card account has a certain amount immediately after receipt — a credit limit, within which you can make purchases. A debit card account can only contain your own funds. For them to appear, you first need to top up the card in any convenient way.
Outwardly, a credit card looks like a debit card. It looks like a small plastic card that bears the following elements and data:

  • the logo of the bank that issued the card;
  • payment system logo;
  • chip;
  • contactless payment icon;
  • unique 16-digit number;
  • expiration date;
  • holder's first and last name;
  • magnetic stripe;
  • security code;
  • holder's signature;
  • phone number and address of the issuing bank's headquarters.

In addition to plastic cards, there are also digital ones. They are virtual and do not have a physical medium. But such cards have all the same details as plastic credit cards. You can find them in your internet banking personal account or mobile app, as well as in the credit card maintenance agreement.

How a credit card differs from a consumer loan

Both with a credit card and a consumer loan, you receive borrowed funds that you can use at your discretion. But this is the only thing these products have in common. Both the credit card and the loan have significant differences:

  • When issuing a consumer loan, the bank immediately transfers the amount specified in the loan agreement to your account. This money can be spent immediately or left in the account. The credit card limit allows you to spend only the amount necessary to pay for a specific purchase.
  • A consumer loan involves overpayment, since the bank charges interest from the first day of using the funds. You can reduce the overpayment only by early repayment of the loan. At the same time, credit cards have a grace period — a time when the bank does not charge interest for using borrowed funds. If you can repay the debt before the end of this period, there will be no overpayment.
  • A consumer loan can only be used once. If you need money, after repaying the debt, you will have to apply to the bank again for a new loan. The credit card limit is revolving, and it can be used immediately after repaying the previous debt.

In general, a credit card is a simpler and more convenient product. It is more suitable for everyday use, for example, if you don't have enough money until payday, but don't want to borrow from loved ones or apply to microfinance organizations. A consumer loan is better to take out when you need a large amount for a long period.

What requirements do banks have for borrowers?

As a rule, the requirements for borrowers are as follows:

  • Russian citizenship;
  • permanent registration, place of residence, and place of work in the Russian Federation or in the region where there is a bank branch;
  • age from 20 to 65 years;
  • Work experience at the current job of at least 3 months;
  • total work experience of at least 1 year;
  • good credit history;
  • no criminal record.

These requirements are not exact. In the bank you chose, they may look somewhat different. A frequent reason for loan refusal is non-compliance with the criteria. To avoid receiving a negative decision on your application, it is better to clarify the list of requirements in advance. You can do this on the official website of the chosen credit organization or by calling the hotline.

Conclusion

To summarize, a credit card is a convenient tool, but not everyone can qualify for one. If you have a less-than-perfect credit history or a modest salary, you will need to provide more than just your Russian internal passport to obtain one, along with additional certificates. You will also have to meet strict requirements: be a citizen of the Russian Federation, have permanent registration, reside and work in a city with a bank branch, be between 20 and 65 years old, have a work experience of at least 3 months at your current job and a total work experience of at least 1 year, and have a good credit history.

Before applying for a credit card, you can try to improve your chances of a positive decision. We recommend taking the following steps: reduce your debt burden by paying off all loans and microloans, improve your credit history using Sovcombank's Credit Doctor program, prepare certificates confirming your income and employment, or apply to your payroll bank or a bank where you hold a large deposit.
