Today almost everyone has a credit card. The thing is, it is a very convenient and profitable payment tool. You can use it to make ends meet until payday without borrowing money from friends or a microfinance organization. And if you manage to pay off the debt before the grace period ends, you can use the money for free.

What is a credit card and why is it needed

A credit card is a payment tool that you can use to pay for purchases and services in stores and online, pay for utility bills, mobile communications and internet, transfer money to other people, withdraw cash at ATMs, and much more.

In short, a credit card can solve the same tasks as a debit card. But the difference between these two products is that a credit card account has a certain amount of money right after you receive it — the credit limit, within which you can pay for purchases and services. A debit card account can only hold the cardholder's own money. To get money there, a person must first top up the card with cash at an ATM or cashier, or via a transfer.
Externally, a credit card looks like a debit card — it is a small plastic card with the following elements and information:

  • the logo of the bank that issued the card;
  • the payment system logo;
  • a chip;
  • a contactless payment icon;
  • a unique 16-digit number;
  • an expiration date;
  • the cardholder's first and last name;
  • a magnetic stripe;
  • the security code;
  • the cardholder's signature;
  • the phone number and address of the headquarters of the bank that issued the card.

There are also digital (virtual) credit cards. They differ from regular ones only in the absence of a physical medium. At the same time, the card has all the details necessary for payment. You can find them in your personal account in internet banking or in the mobile application.

What to look for when choosing a credit card

There are many credit card offers on the market. Some of them are profitable, while others are not so much. We will tell you what you should pay attention to in order to find the right card.

Credit limit

We recommend paying attention not to the maximum, but to the minimum credit limit. Getting approval for a large amount right away is difficult. Especially if you are not a salary client of the bank and do not use its other products. Usually, upon the first application, banks issue no more than 40,000-50,000 RUB.
In the future, you will be able to increase your credit limit if you constantly use the card and make mandatory minimum payments on time. Please note that the available amount may also be reduced. This can happen if you allow delays.

Grace period

For some credit cards, the grace period is up to 50-60 days. But for popular cards, the grace period is longer — up to 90-120 days. Also, some credit cards provide for installment plans. It can range from 2 to 24 months, depending on the terms of a specific bank or partner store.
We recommend paying attention not only to the duration of the grace period, but also to which operations it applies to. For most credit cards, the grace period applies only to the payment for goods and services, while banks charge a high interest rate for cash withdrawals and transfers.

Interest rate

The interest rate on credit cards is significantly higher than on regular consumer loans. A large overpayment is provided for using the credit card for other than its intended purpose — that is, for withdrawing cash from it and transferring borrowed funds.

Issuance and maintenance costs

Usually, the issuance of credit cards is free. But banks charge an annual or monthly fee for their maintenance. Some credit organizations do not charge a fee if certain conditions are met. For example, when making purchases for a minimum amount per month or connecting a special subscription.
In addition to maintenance, banks charge a commission for additional services. For example, for notifications about receipts and expense transactions or for loan insurance.

Cash withdrawals and transfers

As we mentioned above, most banks charge an interest rate on cash withdrawals and transfers of borrowed funds. In addition, credit organizations charge a considerable commission for performing these operations.
If you plan to use a credit card, including for these purposes, it is better to look for offers that provide free transfers and cash withdrawals.

Cashback on purchases

Most popular credit cards have profitable bonus programs. By paying with such cards, you can get cashback for purchases. We recommend paying attention to credit cards that allow you to choose categories of increased reward. Thus, the benefit from purchases will be greater.

Who can get a credit card and what documents are needed for this

Banks usually impose the following requirements on borrowers:

  • Russian citizenship;
  • permanent registration, place of residence, and place of employment in the Russian Federation;
  • age from 18 to 65 years;
  • work experience at the current job of at least 3 months;
  • total work experience of at least 1 year;
  • a regular source of income;
  • good credit history;
  • no criminal record.

These criteria are not entirely exact. In the chosen bank, they may look different. To avoid being rejected due to non-compliance with the criteria, it is better to study their list in advance. This can be done on the website of the credit organization or by calling the hotline.
The list of documents also depends on the chosen bank. To issue a credit card, you may need:

  • Russian citizen passport;
  • a second identity document — SNILS, INN, driver's license, international passport, military ID, and so on;
  • certificates confirming income and employment.
