What is KPP
What the code is for
Having a KPP is a guarantee that the financial company has actually registered with the Federal Tax Service and operates legally on the Russian market. Making payments (state fees, fines) without specifying this information is impossible. Such a document will not be processed by any bank.
Without the code of reason for registration, it will be impossible to organize state procurement or conduct tenders and auctions.
We already know why a financial company needs this digit combination, but why the client needs this information is a question that needs an answer. The 9-digit combination is a component of the payment order for paying budget dues or fines. If even a single mistake is made in the KPP field when filling out a payment order, the financial institution will reject the transaction, and the money will be returned to the bank card or account.
Note! Errors in payment documents can be avoided by generating statements automatically. There are many web services that allow you to generate a payment document in 1 click.
How it is decoded
Under Russian law, every taxpayer, whether an individual or a legal entity, must register and sign up with the Federal Tax Service. During registration, taxpayers are assigned an INN, and in addition to this, legal entities are assigned a KPP — the code of reason for registration. It consists of 9 digits that encrypt important information.

- Using the first four digits, you can determine the tax office where the legal entity registered.
- The next two characters are the reason for registration.
Note! If the number is assigned to a Russian company, it is given values from 01 to 50, and for foreign organizations, from 51 to 99.
- From the last three digits, you can find out the number of companies registered for the same reason.
Let's look at a practical example of how the abbreviation is decoded, which is not used. When the company registered with the tax service, it was assigned the code 773601001. From the first digits, we can determine that the digit combination 7736 belongs to the Federal Tax Service Inspection No. 36 for Moscow in the South-Western Administrative District. The digits 01 help determine the address of the legal entity at the place of registration. And the three-digit number 001 indicates that Sberbank registered only once.
The KPPs of the bank's regional offices are formed according to the same principle.

How to find bank details
Bank details are information that is not secret and can be found out in a few minutes.
Bank's INN and KPP
This information can be found in various ways:
- On the bank's official website. Organizations constantly indicate their details, including the INN and KPP.
- In your Personal Account. If you are a bank client and have your own account, find the "Accounts" section — this is where the necessary information is stored.
- At the office. Clients living near a bank branch can always request the INN and KPP from a bank employee.
- By hotline phone number. To find out the code, name the address where the bank branch is located.
- Visit the Federal Tax Service website.
- In the "Questions and Answers" section. Very often people additionally ask about codes, and specialists post answers in the relevant sections.
There are many ways to find the information you need. Choose the one that suits you best.
KPP by BIC
If you need to find not only the KPP, but also the BIC and other information, it is available online. You can get this information directly from a bank employee (or on the company's official website). At the same time, be very careful and write down the numbers correctly. If you are not sure you heard everything correctly, ask again.
Specifying the KPP is a mandatory requirement when filling out corporate documents. If this data is missing, the document cannot be recognized as valid.
When filling out corporate documentation, you must include:
- the organization's legal address;
- INN and KPP;
- details of the bank where the institution is serviced;
- contacts.
The INN and KPP are issued simultaneously, so this data is most often indicated in the bank details separated by a slash, for example, 000000000/111111111. However, this is optional, and the codes can always be specified separately from each other.
Codes of major banks

Every bank has its own code. We have already written about Sberbank in Moscow. The Siberian branch is assigned the number 540602001; the Central Russian branch — 775002002, and the Baikal branch — 380843001. The Ural branch has the KPP 667102008, and the Volga-Vyatka branch is assigned the number 526002001.
Looking at the KPP of VTB payer, the Moscow branches are assigned the number 770943002, St. Petersburg — 783543011, Rostov-on-Don — 616443001, and Nizhny Novgorod — 526043001.
Alfa-Bank also has its own code. The Moscow branch has the number 770801001, the code 780443001 is assigned to branches located in St. Petersburg, and the number 540743001 is assigned to institutions located in Nizhny Novgorod.
Raiffeisenbank branches also have a KPP. Moscow institutions have the code 770201001, St. Petersburg — 784143001, and Novosibirsk — 540743001.
The reason code for tax registration (KPP) for the same organization differs across regions. It is generated based on the location and affiliation with the Federal Tax Service (IFNS). For example, there are several tax offices in the capital of the Russian Federation, so the branches have different codes.
Who it is assigned to
A nine-digit number is assigned to Russian organizations in addition to the INN at the location of their primary registration. If a company changes its legal address to a territory under the jurisdiction of a different tax office, a new code is assigned. A KPP is also assigned by the IFNS at the location of each branch and where the company owns real estate.
The reason code for tax registration is also assigned to foreign organizations.
Please note! A single code is usually assigned to small organizations. Large companies have multiple representative offices across various cities of the Russian Federation, and each of them has its own bank details.
Do sole proprietors have a KPP?
By law, the code is assigned only to legal entities. Since individual entrepreneurs do not have one, there is no point in flipping through the pages of a contract to find the necessary information. If you happen to see a KPP while browsing the agreement, the code belongs not to the individual entrepreneur themselves, but to the financial institution where the entrepreneur holds an account. Why is the KPP indicated in the contract then? The answer is simple — when filling out a payment order, it is necessary to indicate the recipient's code, which in this case is the bank.

The KPP is required when drawing up various agreements.
Note! Be very careful when using online banking for money transfers. Although money is returned if a mistake is made, the bank keeps the transfer fee.
Most troubles happen when a user wanted to make a loan payment, but the payment was returned. As a result, the financial company charges penalties. To prevent anything like this from happening, correctly indicate the KPP in the payment details.
To summarize, we can say: the reason code for tax registration (KPP) is needed exclusively by legal entities to conduct various financial transactions. No payment document is valid without it.
