Why find out where money came from on a Sberbank card

Any individual or legal entity needs to be aware of all transactions on their card. Knowing the sender of funds will not only provide peace of mind but also help protect against trouble. We will tell you about two dangers that await a bank card holder in such a situation.

  1. A transfer from an unknown sender may turn out to be part of a fraudulent scheme. First, scammers supposedly accidentally send a certain amount to the victim's card, and then call back asking to return the money, sometimes even threatening to go to the police. Immediately after receiving the funds, the scammers go to the bank with an application to cancel the "erroneous" transaction. Thus, a law-abiding citizen gives away not only someone else's money, but also their own.
  2. Another possible consequence of an unexpected receipt of money into an account is a lawsuit for unjust enrichment. Any bank client can make an erroneous transfer by making a typo in the phone number or recipient's account number. If the card holder intentionally decides to keep the funds or decides that this is money they were waiting for (from a friend, from work, etc.), from a legal standpoint they are appropriating and using someone else's finances. The person who made the incorrect transaction will not be able to obtain the recipient's contact information due to bank secrecy and will be forced to go to court. There, they can recover not only their money, but also interest for using it and legal costs.

who is the sender of money to a Sberbank card

It is necessary to see the sender's details for your own convenience in many everyday situations:

  • during group money collections with many participants (at school, at work, etc.);
  • when receiving online payment for goods or services;
  • if you are expecting multiple transfers of the exact same amount;
  • if the received money is a gift and you need to know who to thank.

How to find out who transferred money to a Sberbank card

First of all, it should be noted that you will not be able to obtain complete information about who transferred the money. The bank can only provide the following transaction details:

  • date and time;
  • transfer amount;
  • sending method (via SberBank Online, ATM, etc.);
  • first and last digits of the card number;
  • sender's first name, patronymic, and last initial, or the name of the sender (if it is a legal entity that is not a government agency or an employer under a salary project);
  • payment purpose (social benefit, salary);
  • a message left by the sender;
  • money transfer purpose code.

If the "Transaction Notifications" service is enabled on your phone or the SberBank Online app is installed, you should instantly receive an SMS or push notification with the transfer details when receiving funds. If for some reason this did not happen, you can find out the required transaction information in several ways.

Via SberBank Online

You will need to log into the SberBank website. Next, find the card section on the homepage and select the required card. You will immediately see the transaction history indicating the location and method of sending funds, date, time, amount, sender's first name, patronymic, and last initial. Similar information can be viewed by selecting "Card Statement", which additionally analyzes the total amount of transactions and spending/depositing categories, or by ordering a card account statement. All information requested online is provided free of charge.

Via mobile banking

If the "Transaction Notifications" service is enabled, you can get a statement of the last 10 transactions via SMS. Simply send a message to number 900 with the text:

  • "ISTORIYA XXXX";
  • "ISTORIA XXXX";
  • "VYPISKA XXXX";
  • "VYPISKA XXXX";
  • "02 XXXX".

XXXX represents the last 4 digits of the card number.

However, this method is less informative — the SMS will not contain the sender's name, only the date, amount, and method of crediting the funds. The request fee is charged in accordance with your mobile operator's tariff plan.

At a bank branch

You must bring your passport to visit a bank branch. To see a specialist, you will need to take a ticket from the terminal to determine your place in line. A bank employee will prepare a free card transaction statement for any period (a week, a month, or a custom time frame).

Via ATM

You can find the nearest ATM in the SberBank app or on their website. You will only need to bring the card to which the unusual payment was received. Insert or tap your card at the ATM. After entering your PIN code, click "Transaction history and mini-statement", then "Get mini-statement". Please note that this is a paid service.

Via customer support

If none of the listed methods can be used, you can call the SberBank hotline at 900 or +7 (495) 500-55-50. An operator will help you obtain a card statement and tell you how to act correctly in case of a suspicious transfer.

Is it always possible to find out who transferred money to a card

Privacy policy prohibits banks from disclosing their clients' personal data. The amount of information that organization employees can provide depends on how the money was credited. A statement will be most informative when receiving money through SberBank Online or mobile banking — it will show the sender's first name, patronymic, and last initial. If money was deposited into the account via an ATM or bank branch, you will not receive such data. Transfers to a card from a banking product of a third-party organization will also remain anonymous.

How to return an erroneous transfer to the sender

Under no circumstances should you independently transfer money to a person who reported an erroneous transfer to you — there is a probability of falling into a scam and losing your savings. You need to make it clear to the person that you do not mind returning the funds, but only with the involvement of bank employees. To do this, the sender must independently contact the financial institution with an application to cancel the erroneous transaction. To speed up the process, the recipient of someone else's money should confirm their consent to the return in writing.

As a conclusion, let's outline the first steps you need to take when receiving funds from an unfamiliar account. First, if the crediting notification came via SMS, it is important to make sure it was actually sent by the bank. SberBank sends messages exclusively from number 900; any third-party number is fraudulent. Next, you should ask your relatives and friends who might have made the transfer. If none of them did it, order a card transaction statement in any convenient way — in person or remotely. And only when all the above actions have yielded no results should you contact the bank with an application to refuse the transfer. This will protect you from fraudsters and prevent legal disputes over the appropriation of someone else's funds.
