A 3-month loan is an opportunity to get a small amount of money with interest for a short term. Such a loan is useful when you are short on cash for a small purchase or need to pay for education. We explain the terms and requirements for getting a 3-month loan in 2024.

Terms for getting a 3-month loan

Borrowers usually apply for a small amount for 3 months—up to 50,000 RUB. The terms for such loans (especially unsecured ones) are not the most favorable. They typically look as follows:

  • Loan amount. As a rule, it is small—no more than 50,000 RUB. You can apply for a 3-month loan for a larger amount as well, but this is usually not done because the shorter the term, the higher the monthly payment.
  • Interest rate. On average, the overpayment on an unsecured consumer loan is 25% per annum. The interest rate can be lower (for example, at VTB the minimum overpayment is 3.9% per annum) or higher (for example, at Ak Bars Bank the maximum overpayment is 41.5% per annum). For small loans with short terms, the interest rate typically reaches its maximum value.
  • Borrower requirements. These are usually not strict. To get a 3-month loan, you must be a Russian citizen, have permanent registration in Russia, be over 18 years old, and have a work history of at least 3 months at your current job.
  • Document requirements. As a rule, a Russian internal passport is sufficient to get a small 3-month loan. A second identity document may also be required. In rare cases, banks require certificates confirming income and employment. This may happen if the borrower has a very poor credit history.

Who can get a consumer loan and what documents are required

Almost anyone can get a small loan for 3 months—banks rarely refuse even borrowers with a mediocre or zero credit history.
Usually, the requirements for clients are as follows:

  • Russian citizenship;
  • permanent residency in the Russian Federation;
  • age from 18 to 75 years;
  • work experience at the current job of at least 3 months;
  • no criminal record.

This list of requirements is approximate. For example, to get a loan at Alfa-Bank, you must have an income of at least the established minimum. Non-compliance with the criteria is a frequent reason for loan rejection. To avoid a negative decision on your application, it is best to check the requirements in advance on the credit institution's website or via the hotline.

As mentioned above, a Russian internal passport is usually the only required document. In some cases, the following may also be required:

  • a second identity document (SNILS, INN, international passport, driver's license, military ID, servicemen's ID, etc.);
  • certificates confirming income and employment (usually requested if the borrower has a poor credit history or high debt load);
  • collateral documents (if the client is taking a very large amount secured by real estate or a vehicle).

How to get a 3-month loan: step-by-step guide

Getting a small loan for a 3-month term is very simple. To do this, you need to:

  • Review lending terms at different financial institutions. In advertisements, credit institutions often talk about favorable terms: low interest rates, fast application review, and a high approval rate. In reality, this may not be the case. Therefore, in addition to loan terms, it is best to also read reviews from other borrowers.
  • Prepare the necessary documents. It is better to do this in advance so you don't waste time collecting certificates after receiving preliminary approval. If the borrower does not have a very good credit history, we recommend preparing documents confirming income and employment in any case.
  • Submit a loan application. Nowadays, many banks allow you to do this online via their official website. Filling out such an application takes just a few minutes.
  • Wait for the bank's decision. Making a preliminary decision on an application usually takes only 10-15 minutes. Banks give their final answer only after verifying the documents and client information.
  • Receive the money. You can collect the loan funds via bank transfer or in cash at a branch of the financial institution.

Why you might be denied a loan and what to do about it

Banks do not disclose why they refuse loans to clients, but this typically happens for the following reasons:

  • Due to a lack of credit history. If a client has never taken out any loans, credit cards, or microloans in the past, they have neither a bad nor a good credit history. For this reason, banks cannot assess the reliability and solvency of the borrower.
  • Due to a bad credit history. If a person has already allowed serious payment delays on loans, credit cards, and microloans, financial institutions may assume that the borrower will not pay off new obligations either.
  • Due to a high debt load. If a person already has active loans and the total monthly payments on them exceed 50% of their income, the borrower will most likely be denied credit. Banks may decide that the client cannot handle such a volume of credit obligations.
  • Due to applications to microfinance organizations. If a person frequently applies to MFIs, they may be denied credit because financial institutions might consider them insolvent. If a borrower frequently takes out microloans, it means they are experiencing financial difficulties.
  • Due to a recent rejection from this bank. If a client applied for a loan very recently and received a negative decision, they should not try to get credit from this company again within the next three months. There is a high probability they will be rejected again.

Even if a person knows there is a high probability they might be denied a loan, they can try to fix the situation. To do this, we recommend the following:

  • Reduce the debt load. To do this, close all current loans and microloans if possible. If this is not possible, try to reduce the amount of monthly payments.
  • Improve your credit history. To do this, clear all current payment delays. If the credit history is very poor, you can use a credit repair service. For example, you can sign up for the “Credit Doctor” program from Sovcombank.
  • Apply for a loan at your salary bank. In this case, the lender will be confident that the client will be able to make monthly loan payments. You can also contact an institution where you have a large deposit opened.
  • Prepare certificates confirming income and employment. If a person has additional income, such as from self-employment or renting out property, it is best to verify that as well.
  • Provide collateral to the bank. This is required when applying for a large amount. A relatively new car or real estate — a room or an apartment — can serve as collateral.
  • Provide a co-signer to the bank. This is a person who will take on the obligation to repay the loan if the borrower stops making monthly payments for any reason. The co-signer must have a good credit history and a low debt load.

Conclusion

To sum up. Getting a 3-month loan is easy, especially when it comes to a small amount. But since the loan is short-term, it will not come with the most favorable terms. Nevertheless, such a loan is an opportunity to get money for those who have no credit history or whose history is slightly damaged by minor payment delays. If a person believes they might be denied credit, they can use the tips provided above.
