Sometimes a person may need a large sum of money. For example, to buy a land plot or a car, for medical treatment, education, repairs, and so on. Accumulating a large sum on your own is difficult, as is borrowing money from close relatives. But you can always contact a bank and apply for a long-term loan. We will explain what is needed to obtain a long-term loan with a high probability of approval and why banks may deny credit.

How to get a long-term loan?

When a person applies for a long-term loan, they usually borrow a large amount. For this reason, getting such a loan can be difficult. As a rule, large amounts for a long term are only available to clients with a good credit history, high income, and low debt load.
To ensure you get a long-term loan, we recommend doing the following:

  • Reduce your debt load. To do this, you need to close all active loans and microloans. If this is not possible, we recommend at least reducing your monthly payments on them, as well as lowering your credit card debt.
  • Improve your credit history. To do this, you need to close all current overdue payments on loans and microloans and settle any lawsuits, if applicable. If your credit history is very poor, it is best to use a credit repair service. For example, Sovcombank offers such a service.
  • Apply for a loan at your salary bank. Alternatively, you can submit an application to a credit institution where you hold a large deposit or savings account. In this case, the lender will be confident that the borrower will have the funds to repay the debt even if they lose their job.
  • Prepare documents confirming your income and employment. If the borrower has additional sources of income, such as self-employment or rental property, they can confirm those as well. In this case, the probability of application approval will be higher.
  • Make a large down payment. This is relevant when applying for a loan secured by real estate or a vehicle. The larger the down payment, the higher the probability of loan approval.
  • Provide collateral. If a person is borrowing a large amount for a long term, they can provide real estate or a car as collateral. Then the probability of approval will be higher, since the lender will be able to sell the property if the client fails to make payments under the agreement for any reason.
  • Bring a co-borrower. This is a person who will take on the obligation to repay the loan if the client fails to make monthly payments for any reason.

Who can get a long-term loan, and what is required for this?

As already mentioned, long-term loans will likely be denied to clients who have had frequent and prolonged payment defaults in the past, currently have other active loans and microloans, or lack official employment and a stable high income.
Requirements for clients applying for a long-term loan are stricter. They typically look as follows:

  • Russian citizenship;
  • permanent registration, place of actual residence, and place of work in a region where there is a bank branch;
  • age from 21 to 65 years;
  • Work experience at the current job of at least 3 months;
  • total work experience of at least 1 year;
  • good credit history;
  • stable income;
  • no criminal record.

These requirements are approximate and may vary depending on the chosen lending institution. To avoid loan denial due to non-compliance with criteria, it is best to review them in advance. You can clarify current borrower requirements on the lender's website or via the hotline. You can also contact a bank branch directly.

Regarding documents, obtaining a long-term loan typically requires providing the following:

  • Russian citizen passport;
  • a second identity document (SNILS, INN, driver's license, international passport, serviceman ID, military ID, etc.);
  • certificates confirming income for the past year and employment status;
    documents for collateral property if security is provided—real estate or a vehicle.

Why loans may be denied: Common reasons

Banks do not disclose why they deny loan applications. However, the most common reasons for loan denial include the following:

  • Lack of credit history. If a client has not previously taken out loans or microloans, the lender has no information on their creditworthiness. For this reason, they will likely be denied a large long-term loan. Therefore, it is best to first take out several small consumer loans in succession and repay them on time. This will help build a good credit history.
  • Bad credit history. If a person has made even minor payment defaults in the past, they can cause a loan denial. This is because banks do not want to risk lending money at interest to people with a poor credit rating.
  • High debt load. If a person already has loans and microloans and their monthly payment amount exceeds 50% of their income, the lending institution may consider them unable to handle another loan obligation.
  • Frequent applications to microfinance organizations. If a borrower frequently takes out loans from MFIs, this can signal that they regularly experience financial difficulties. The bank may decide they will not be able to handle large monthly payments.
  • Recent denial at the same bank. If a person was recently denied a loan at this financial institution, it is best to apply again no sooner than 3 months later. Otherwise, they will likely be denied again.
