Many banks only issue loans to clients who have formal employment and a stable income. But what about people who are not formally employed and need money? Some credit organizations do lend to such borrowers. We will explain the terms under which the unemployed can get a loan, what is required, and which banks to contact in 2024.

Terms under which the unemployed can get a loan in 2024

Since banks cannot verify the solvency of borrowers who are not formally employed—meaning they are essentially unemployed—they are very likely to refuse a loan, or approve it on the most unfavorable terms.
Typically, banks that lend to the unemployed issue loans under the following conditions:

  1. Loan amount. Since banks cannot verify borrowers' creditworthiness, they are only willing to approve small loans—no more than 300,000 to 400,000 RUB. To obtain a larger amount, the client will need to confirm their income.
  2. Loan term. As in the previous case, since credit institutions cannot verify a client's creditworthiness, they are not ready to issue a loan for several years. The maximum borrowers can count on is a loan with a term of up to 1 year.
  3. Interest rate. Without income and employment certificates, the overpayment is close to the maximum. At some credit institutions, the interest rate reaches 73% per annum.
  4. Collateral. If a borrower requests a large amount—starting from 400,000 RUB, they must provide the bank with collateral—such as a vehicle or real estate pledge, or a guarantor—for the application to be approved.
  5. Loan terms for unemployed clients are not the most favorable. Therefore, if a person has alternative sources of income, such as from renting out real estate or self-employment, it is better to confirm them. This will make the available amount larger and the interest rate lower.

What requirements banks impose on the unemployed

Getting a loan while unemployed is difficult. Banks impose very strict requirements on such borrowers. They usually look as follows:

  • Russian citizenship;
  • permanent registration, place of residence, and place of work in the region where the credit institution has a branch;
  • age from 21 to 65 years;
  • total work experience of at least 1 year;
  • good credit history;
  • no criminal record.

These requirements are approximate—at your chosen bank, they may look somewhat different. One of the reasons for loan refusal is failure to meet the criteria. For this reason, to avoid receiving a negative decision, it is best to familiarize yourself with the borrower requirements in advance on the bank's website, via the hotline, or at the lender's branch.

What documents are needed to apply for a loan in 2024

Usually, to get a loan, an unemployed person needs to provide the credit institution with the following documents:

  • Russian citizen passport;
  • a second identity document: SNILS, TIN, driver's license, international passport, military ID, and so on;
  • a military ID or registration certificate if the loan application is submitted by a man of conscription age;
  • documents confirming alternative sources of income, if any;
  • documents for collateral property — a vehicle or real estate.

This list of documents is also approximate—at the chosen credit institution, it may look different. We recommend clarifying in advance what is needed to apply for a loan on the bank's website, via the hotline, or at the financial institution's branch.

What to do if your loan is denied

As already mentioned, getting a loan with interest while unemployed can be difficult—not every credit institution is ready to approve a loan for people who cannot confirm employment and income. For this reason, the probability of loan refusal in such cases is high.
Nevertheless, borrowers have the opportunity to increase their chances of a positive decision. To do this, we recommend doing the following:

  1. Improve your credit history. To do this, you need to close all current overdue payments on other loans, credit cards, and microloans. If your credit history is very poor, it is better to use a credit history repair service before submitting a loan application. For example, you can contact Sovcombank to arrange the "Credit Doctor" program.
  2. Apply for an interest-bearing loan at a bank where you have a large deposit open. The probability of loan approval will be higher if the deposit amount exceeds the requested loan. In that case, the lender will be confident that the client will be able to repay the debt even in a difficult financial situation.
  3. Make a large down payment. This is relevant if a person is applying for a targeted loan. For example, a car loan or a mortgage. Then, if the down payment is at least 40% of the required amount, the probability of application approval will be higher.
  4. Provide the lender with collateral. For example, a pledge of real estate or a vehicle, or a guarantor. In this case, the lender will either realize the borrower's property to cover the debt or require the guarantor to pay off the debt.
  5. Take out life and health insurance. Then the lender will be confident that if something happens to the client—for example, if they get seriously injured or die—the insurance company will pay off the debt for them.
