By issuing loans to borrowers, banks strive to minimize their risks associated with debt default. This can happen, for example, if a person loses their job or becomes disabled. In such cases, insurance helps partially protect both borrowers and lending organizations.
What is loan insurance and why is it needed?
Insurance allows lending organizations to reduce risks when issuing loans. If an unforeseen situation arises, such as the loss of ability to work or the layoff of the borrower, the insurance company assumes the obligation to repay the debt to the bank.
There are two types of insurance that can be offered to a borrower when taking out a consumer loan:
- Life and health insurance. This type of insurance includes protection against death, disability, and temporary loss of working capacity. If a bank client faces such situations, the insurance company will take over the repayment of the debt to the lending organization.
- Job loss insurance. This type of insurance protects the borrower against job loss through no fault of their own—due to staff reduction, company liquidation, and so on. However, it is worth bearing in mind that in such cases, insurance does not cover voluntary resignation.

Banks usually insist on purchasing insurance for loans that can be obtained using only a Russian internal passport—without additional certificates and documents. Such loans include:
- consumer cash loan;
- loan issued by passport;
- express loan;
- loans without collateral, guarantors, and a down payment.
When taking out insurance, it is worth considering that it can increase the cost of the loan by 1-10%. Therefore, before applying for a loan, you need to calculate whether purchasing an insurance policy is justified and whether it would be profitable to decline it.
Can you get a loan without insurance?
In most cases, the borrower can refuse to purchase an insurance policy. This refers to voluntary types of insurance:
- health insurance against temporary disability;
- life insurance;
- title insurance against loss of property ownership rights;
- job loss insurance (employer-initiated redundancy).
However, there are cases where insurance is mandatory. According to the mortgage law, the borrower is obliged to insure the property that serves as collateral for the full amount against damage and loss risks. The bank may also require the client to purchase a CASCO policy when taking out a car loan.
That is, mandatory insurance applies to large consumer loans where the acquired property acts as collateral for the bank. Such loans include mortgages and car loans. It is impossible to refuse insurance when obtaining such loans. However, the borrower can independently choose an insurance company with more favorable terms.
Features of a loan without insurance
A loan without insurance may not be as profitable as one with it. At the же time, it has its own advantages. So, we can attribute the following to the features of lending without an insurance policy:
- No additional expenses. When taking out a loan, the borrower saves on the cost of the insurance policy, which is usually included in the principal debt.
- Increase in the interest rate. Many banks offer higher overpayments on loans without insurance to compensate for potential risks.
- Borrower's responsibility. In the event of unforeseen situations, such as job loss or prolonged illness, the client will have to bear responsibility to the lender independently.
- Difficulties with refinancing or getting a new loan. A borrower who has refused insurance may face difficulties in the future when trying to refinance a loan or get a new one.
- Stricter requirements. The bank may set additional conditions for issuing a loan without insurance. For example, it may request a higher down payment or offer a shorter loan term.
- Need for additional guarantees. The lack of an insurance policy increases risks for the credit organization, so it may offer less favorable lending terms or demand additional guarantees, such as a guarantor or collateral.
How to cancel insurance after receiving a loan?
Banks often impose an insurance policy, threatening the borrower with a higher interest rate and loan denial. Some clients cannot cope with the pressure and take out insurance.
In such cases, you should remember that you can cancel the insurance policy even after concluding the loan agreement. To do this, you need to contact the bank and the insurance company with an application and an explanation of the reasons for refusal with references to the relevant clauses of the law.
If you receive a negative response to your application, you can continue considering this issue in court. In case of a positive response, the bank must provide a new loan repayment schedule excluding the insurance.
