Sometimes even retirees may need a bank loan. For example, when an unexpected breakdown occurs and you need to buy new appliances, or if you want to improve your dacha. At the same time, there is a perception that it can be difficult for retirement-age customers to get a loan. Let's discuss whether retirees can apply for a bank loan and what is required, and also answer the most frequently asked questions.

Can retirees apply for a bank loan?

Banks used to be reluctant to issue loans to people of retirement age. Now, however, retirees can get money at interest from almost any company. This is due to the fact that credit institutions have somewhat revised their views on older people. Today, this category of borrowers inspires more confidence as they are more disciplined and conscientious. In addition, retirees are sometimes more solvent than young people because they have a stable, guaranteed income.
However, banks often offer retirees less favorable lending terms. For example, a small amount for a short term or a high interest rate. Also, some lenders may require a retirement-age borrower to provide collateral or a guarantor.

How loans for retirees differ from other lending programs

First and foremost, loans for retirees differ from other lending programs in their terms and conditions. While a standard consumer loan typically offers up to 5 million RUB, pension-age borrowers will likely be limited to a maximum of 1 million RUB.
The loan term also differs. Standard loans can usually be taken out for up to 5, and sometimes up to 15, years, whereas retirees will most likely be granted funds for no more than one year.
This applies to interest rates as well. Although we mentioned that older borrowers are generally more disciplined and solvent, there is a high probability that they may be unable to make monthly payments due to health reasons. Therefore, to mitigate their risks, lenders set higher interest rates for such clients. For example, while overpayments for regular borrowers start at 14.9% per annum, for retirees they will range from 24.9% per annum.

Who can apply for a loan for retirees, and what documents are required?

Banks generally impose the same requirements on retirement-age borrowers as they do on other clients. Therefore, the criteria that retirees must meet typically look as follows:

  • hold citizenship of the Russian Federation;
  • having permanent employment and actual residence in a region where a bank branch is located;
  • being no older than 75 years by the expected loan maturity date;
  • having a steady income;
  • having no current overdues or arrears;
  • no criminal record.

As for documents, submitting an application will require a passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation. Retirees can confirm their income with a certificate obtained from the Pension Fund of Russia or generated via the Gosuslugi portal. Some banks also accept bank account statements from the financial institution where the pension is deposited.

How to get a loan for retirees on the most favorable terms?

Banks generally do not have separate loan programs specifically for retirees. This means loans are available to them under the same conditions as regular clients. Nevertheless, we advise against applying to the first company you come across. For instance, lending terms at a lesser-known bank may be much more favorable than those of a large and reliable financial institution.
For this reason, to secure the most favorable lending terms, we recommend the following:

  1. Pay attention to loan interest rates. Specifically, we recommend looking at both the minimum and maximum rates. Very few retirement-age borrowers qualify for loans on the most favorable terms. Most likely, a bank will offer a retiree a loan with an overpayment close to the maximum.
  2. Explore special lending programs. Some banks actually offer special terms for retirement-age borrowers, allowing them to take out loans on more favorable conditions.
  3. Provide documents confirming an additional source of income. Retirees often do not live on their pension alone and usually have supplementary sources of income, such as a part-time job or a rented-out apartment. Therefore, if a retiree has additional income, they can provide a certificate of its amount to the bank. In this case, the interest rate will be lower, and the loan amount and term will be greater.
  4. Provide collateral or a co-borrower. If security is available, the bank is more likely to offer the retirement-age borrower more favorable lending terms. With a guarantor, the interest rate on the loan will be significantly lower, while the loan amount and term will be larger.
  5. Take out life and health insurance. In this case, the bank will be confident that if an insured event occurs, the insurance company will cover the client's debt. Consequently, the lender will be able to lower the interest rate for the retiree.

Where can you get a favorable loan for retirees in 2024?

In fact, retirees can apply for a loan at almost any bank that provides retail lending. At the same time, older individuals may find it difficult to choose a truly advantageous and suitable option. Therefore, we recommend paying attention to offers from the following banks.

Answers to frequently asked questions

Finally, let us answer the most frequent questions that readers may have.

Up to what age can a retiree obtain a loan?

Banks typically provide loans to borrowers aged 21 or older at the time of application and no older than 75 by the expected loan repayment date. However, in some financial institutions, the age limit may be lower—65 or 68 years. In rare cases, banks issue loans to borrowers who will be 80 years old by the time the debt is repaid.

Can retirees get a credit card?

Getting a credit card is much easier for retirement-age clients than a consumer loan. At the same time, the age limit, as in the previous case, is usually 70–75 years. This means older borrowers will likely only be able to obtain loans from microfinance organizations.

What is the maximum amount a retiree can receive?

Retirement-age clients are usually eligible for no more than 1 million RUB. However, with collateral, a co-borrower, and life and health insurance, they may be able to get up to 5 million RUB for a term of up to 7 years.
