An unsecured loan is a type of lending. It differs from similar products in that the borrower does not need to provide real estate or a vehicle as collateral, nor provide a guarantor. Therefore, the terms for such a loan are not the most favorable. We will tell you what an unsecured loan is, under what conditions it can be obtained, and in what cases taking one out is justified.
What is loan collateral
Collateral is a mechanism that guarantees the lender the return of the debt if the borrower becomes insolvent. Thus, banks significantly reduce the risk of non-repayment of money. And since risk is the key factor that determines the loan amount and term, as well as the interest rate, with collateral, borrowers can count on more favorable lending terms.
Today, the most common ways to secure a loan are:
- real estate collateral;
- vehicle collateral;
- guaranty.
You can also secure a loan with a bank deposit. But keep in mind that in this case, a very large amount must be in the borrower's account - enough to cover the debt to the lender.

Under what conditions can you get an unsecured loan
Accordingly, an unsecured loan is a loan obtained without real estate or vehicle collateral, or a guarantor. The terms for this type of lending are not the most favorable:
- High interest rate. On average, the overpayment on a consumer loan is 25% per annum. The interest rate can be lower (for example, the minimum overpayment at VTB is 3.9% per annum) or higher (for example, the maximum overpayment at Ak Bars Bank is 73% per annum).
- Loan amount. Without collateral, it is small. Usually, without collateral and a guarantor, you can get from 10,000 to 5 million RUB. While with collateral, you can apply for up to 30 million RUB.
- Loan term. Like the amount, it is small. As a rule, banks issue unsecured loans for a term of 1 year to 5 years. And if there is collateral or a guarantor, borrowers can get a loan for a period of up to 30 years.
When is it worth taking out a loan without collateral and a guarantor
A secured loan is more profitable than an unsecured one - its interest rate is lower, and the loan amount and term are larger. But by offering real estate or a vehicle as collateral, the borrower takes on big risks.
If a person stops making monthly payments and allows significant delinquency, the bank will be able to sell the property to repay the debt. And if a guarantor acts as collateral, the responsibility for repaying the loan will fall squarely on them.
For these reasons, taking out a loan without collateral and a guarantor is justified in the following cases:
- if the borrower has no property that could be provided as collateral;
- if the borrower does not have a responsible guarantor who could take responsibility for repaying the loan;
- if a person wants to receive money on the day of applying to the bank;
- if the borrower is unsure whether they will be able to consistently make monthly payments throughout the entire loan term.
Who can get an unsecured loan and what is required for it
A large unsecured loan is only available to responsible borrowers — those who have not had significant past delinquencies, currently have no excessive loans and microloans, and have a stable job with a good salary.
Usually, banks' requirements for borrowers look as follows:
- Russian citizenship;
- permanent residency in the Russian Federation;
- place of actual residence and workplace in the region where there is a bank branch;
- age from 21 to 65 years;
- Work experience at the current job of at least 3 months;
- total work experience of at least 1 year;
- constant income not lower than the minimum wage (MROT) in the region;
- A good credit history.
These requirements are approximate. They may look somewhat different at the chosen bank. To avoid a rejection, it is best to check the criteria in advance on the credit institution's website or via the hotline.
To get an unsecured loan, a customer of a credit institution needs to prove their solvency. To do this, in addition to a Russian internal passport, they must provide certificates confirming their income for the past year and their place of work.
How to get an unsecured loan
Applying for a loan without collateral and a guarantor is simple. To do this, you need to do the following:
- Review the lending terms at more popular and reliable banks. In particular, we recommend paying attention to the minimum and maximum interest rates, the penalty fee for violating contract terms, and the borrower requirements.
- Prepare the document package in advance. To do this, find out what exactly is required to apply for a loan at the chosen bank. You can do this on the credit institution's website, via the hotline, or at a branch.
- Submit a loan application. In most credit institutions, this can be done online or at a branch.
- Wait for the lender's decision. Usually, a preliminary decision takes only 10-15 minutes. The bank will give a final response after verifying the borrower's information provided in the application, which may take 1-2 business days.
- In case of a positive decision, sign the loan agreement and receive the money. As a rule, you can get the loan in cash at the credit institution's cash desk or via bank transfer to your account.
What to do if your loan is denied
Banks do not voice the reasons for loan rejections. However, this most often happens due to a poor credit history, high debt load, and a low salary.
Therefore, to get a loan, we recommend doing the following:
- Improve your credit history. To do this, you need to close all current delinquencies on loans, credit cards, and microloans. If your credit history is very poor, it is better to use a credit rating improvement service before applying for a loan. For example, you can contact Sovcombank for their "Credit Doctor" program.
- Reduce your debt load. To do this, if possible, decrease the amount of your monthly payments on loans, credit cards, and microloans. If a person is applying for a large unsecured loan, it would be even better to close all current obligations altogether.
- Apply to your payroll bank. Credit institutions are loyal to payroll clients because they are confident in their solvency. If the borrower has a large deposit opened with a certain bank, it is best to apply for a loan there.
- Prepare documents in advance confirming your earnings for the past year and your place of work. If the borrower has additional sources of income, such as renting out real estate, it is best to confirm those as well.
