A credit card is a convenient and rewarding tool. You can use it to pay for purchases when you are short on cash until payday, earn cashback, and use the money interest-free.
What is a credit card
Depending on the bank, a credit card can be virtual (digital-only) or plastic. A physical card looks like the familiar small plastic card with the following information printed on it:
- the logo of the bank that issued the card;
- the payment system logo;
- a unique 16-digit number;
- the month and year the card is valid until;
- the cardholder's first and last name or initials;
- the security code;
- the cardholder's signature;
- hotline phone number and bank address
- that issued the card.
A virtual credit card differs from a plastic one only in that it has no physical medium. That means it lacks a chip and a magnetic stripe. All the information contained on the plastic card is also available on the virtual card. You can find it in your online banking account.
How a credit card differs from a debit card
A credit card differs from a debit card in that immediately after you receive it, its account contains a certain amount—the credit limit approved by the bank for the cardholder. You can spend it at your own discretion:
- paying for goods and services in stores;
- paying for goods and services online;
- paying for utility bills, mobile communications, and internet;
- transferring money to other people;
- withdrawing cash at ATMs, and so on.
For almost all of the transactions listed above, most banks charge interest rates and fees. Only a limited number of credit cards offer free cash withdrawals, transfers, and bill payments.
How a credit card differs from a consumer loan
In the case of both a credit card and a consumer loan, a person receives borrowed funds to spend on their needs. This is the only thing these two products have in common. They have many more differences:
- In the case of a consumer loan, the bank transfers the full amount specified in the loan agreement. The client may not even spend the entire limit all at once. In that case, the money will simply be stored in a current or card account. With a credit card, you can spend any amount within the approved limit—precisely as much as needed to pay for a specific purchase.
- A consumer loan always involves overpayment—the bank charges an interest rate from the first day the money is used. The interest amount can only be reduced by early repayment of the loan. A credit card features a grace period—a period during which the cardholder can use borrowed funds without accruing interest. If you clear the debt before the grace period ends, there will be no overpayment.
- You can receive a consumer loan only once. If a person needs a new amount after repaying the loan, they will have to apply to the bank for borrowing again. The credit limit on a credit card is revolving—you can use it immediately after repaying the old debt.
A credit card is a product that is simpler to issue and use. It is better suited for regular use—to tide you over until payday. Obtaining a consumer loan is more justified when you need a large amount for a long period.
Who can get a credit card and what is required for it
Usually, the requirements for borrowers applying for a credit card are as follows:
- Russian citizenship;
- permanent registration, place of residence, and place of employment in the Russian Federation;
- age from 18 to 65 years;
- work experience at the current job of at least 3 months;
- total work experience of at least 1 year;
- a regular source of income;
- good credit history;
- no criminal record.
This list of requirements is an estimate—at your chosen bank, it may look different. To avoid being rejected for not meeting the criteria, it is best to familiarize yourself with them in advance. You can do this on the official website of the credit organization, by calling the hotline, or at a branch of the financial institution.
As for documents, getting a credit card may require:
- Russian citizen passport;
- a second identity document—SNILS, INN,
- a driver's license, international passport,
- a military ID, and so on;
- certificates confirming income and employment.
How to get a credit card: step-by-step instructions
Getting a credit card is simple—today, at almost all banks, this can be done online on the official website or mobile app. Usually, to issue a card, you need to:
- Review offers from well-known and popular banks. We recommend paying attention to the minimum credit limit, grace period, terms for cash withdrawals and transfers, cashback conditions, and borrower and document requirements.
- Submit an application to the chosen bank online or at a branch. To do this, you need to fill out a short application form, indicating your full name, date and place of birth, passport details, registration and actual residential addresses, and information about your job, income, and marital status.
- Wait for the bank's decision. Usually, a preliminary decision takes no more than 10-15 minutes. In rare cases, it can take 1-2 business days—when the lender needs to clarify information about the borrower.
- In case of a positive decision on the application, sign the credit agreement and receive the card.
