When you need to pay for a major purchase, medical treatment, or education, but lack personal savings and cannot turn to family or friends for help, you can apply for a consumer loan at a bank. The advantage of a loan is that it can be spent for any purpose. At the same time, the borrower does not need to report their expenses to the lender. We will explain the conditions underimacy a consumer loan can be obtained in 2024, who is eligible, what is required, why a loan application might be rejected, and how to increase the chances of a positive decision.

What are the conditions for obtaining a consumer loan in 2024

Banks mostly issue unsecured consumer loans—meaning without collateral or a guarantor. Because of this, the conditions for consumer loans are less favorable. In 2024, they look as follows:

  1. Loan amount. Usually it is relatively small—from 100,000 to 5 million RUB. The borrowing limit depends on the borrower's individual characteristics, specifically their credit history and salary amount. If the client provides collateral to the lender, the loan amount can be increased to 15 or even 30 million RUB.
  2. Loan term. For an unpurpose consumer loan, it ranges from 6 months to 5 years. A secured loan can be obtained for a term of up to 15 or even 30 years.
  3. Interest rate. The average overpayment on an unpurpose loan is 25% per annum. At the same time, the interest rate can be lower (for example, VTB issues a cash loan with a minimum overpayment of 3.9% per annum) or higher (at VTB as well, the maximum overpayment is 52.2% per annum).
  4. Borrower requirements. Usually, to apply for a consumer loan, you must be a citizen of the Russian Federation, have permanent registration in Russia, be at least 21 years old and no older than 60, have work experience at your current job of at least 3 months, and a total work experience of at least 1 year. You must also receive a salary sufficient to make monthly payments, have a good credit history, and have no criminal record. These requirements may vary depending on the bank.
  5. Document package. To get a loan from a bank, you need to provide not only a Russian internal passport, but also additional identity documents, and certificates confirming income and permanent employment. If the client provides collateral, they will also need to provide documents for the real estate or vehicle.

Who can get a consumer loan and what is required for it

Usually, the requirements for clients are as follows:

Russian citizenship;

  • permanent registration, place of residence, and place of work in the region where the bank operates;
  • age from 21 to 65 years;
  • work experience at the current job of at least 3 months;
  • total work experience of at least 1 year;
  • permanent source of income not lower than the regional minimum wage (MROT);
  • good credit history;
  • no criminal record.

This list of requirements is approximate. At your chosen bank, it may look different. To avoid rejection due to non-compliance with the criteria, it is best to clarify their list in advance. This can be done on the credit organization's website, by calling the hotline, or at a branch of the financial institution.

As for documents, applying for a consumer loan may require the following:

  • Russian citizen passport;
  • a second identity document (for example, SNILS, INN, driver's license, international passport, military ID, and so on);
  • certificates confirming income and place of work;
  • documents for collateral property—real estate or a vehicle.

How to apply for a loan: step-by-step instructions

Applying for a consumer loan is very easy. To do this, you need to complete several steps:

  1. Review the loan issuance conditions at different banks. In promotional campaigns, credit organizations often promise low interest rates, large amounts, and long terms. But these conditions rarely correspond to reality. Usually, the most favorable tariffs are only available to payroll clients with high income, good credit history, and low debt load when taking out insurance and additional services.
  2. Prepare the document package. Some credit organizations issue loans using only a Russian internal passport. However, we also recommend providing income and employment certificates. This will increase the chances of a positive decision on the application.
  3. Submit a loan application. You can do this online on the bank's official website or at a branch of the credit institution.
  4. Wait for the bank's decision. A preliminary decision usually takes a short time — 5-10 minutes. The credit institution will give a final answer after verifying the client's information.
  5. Receive the money. This can usually be done via bank transfer to a bank account or in cash at a branch of the financial institution.

Why you might be denied a loan

Banks never state why they deny loans, but this usually happens for a few main reasons:

  1. Lack of credit history. If the borrower has not previously had loans, microloans, or credit cards, the bank cannot assess their solvency and reliability. In this case, we recommend first taking out a small consumer loan to build a positive credit history.
  2. Poor credit history. If a person had past overdue payments on loans and microloans, the bank may assume that the borrower will not fulfill their obligations to them either. This can lead to a denial of a new loan.
  3. High debt load. If a person already has several loans, microloans, and credit cards, and their monthly payments exceed 50% of their income, the bank may deny the loan. Credit institutions prefer not to take risks by issuing money to those who may not cope with another loan obligation.
  4. Frequent applications to microfinance organizations. If a person has frequently taken money from MFIs, the lender may assume that the borrower periodically experiences financial difficulties. Therefore, they may not be able to cope with paying monthly installments on a new loan.
  5. Recent denial from this credit institution. If a person recently applied to this credit institution and was denied, it is best to wait at least three months before reapplying. Otherwise, the probability of another denial increases.

How to increase the chance of a positive decision on your application

Borrowers usually apply for a consumer loan for a large amount — from 100,000 to 5,000,000 RUB or more. For this reason, getting such a loan can be difficult, especially if the person does not have a very good credit history, has a high debt load, or lacks official income.

However, you can try to increase your chances of loan approval. To do this, you should do the following:

  1. Reduce your debt load. To do this, you need to close current loans, microloans, and credit cards, or at least reduce the debts on them.
  2. Increase your credit rating. To do this, you should pay off current debts and overdues and stop legal proceedings if there are any. If your credit history is very poor, you can use the "Credit Doctor" program from Sovcombank.
  3. Contact your payroll bank or a credit institution where you have a large deposit account. Then the lender will be sure that even if the borrower loses their job or becomes disabled, they will have the money to repay the debt.
  4. Prepare certificates of income and permanent employment. If the borrower has additional sources of income, these can also be confirmed.
  5. Provide collateral. Real estate or a vehicle can be used as security. This will increase the chances of getting a loan, as the lender will be able to sell the client's property and close the debt if they stop paying.
  6. Bring a co-borrower. The co-borrower will assume the obligations to repay the loan on an equal footing with the borrower if the latter cannot fulfill them independently.
