A debit card is a convenient banking product. You can use it to pay in stores and online, withdraw cash at ATMs, transfer money to other people, pay utility bills, and much more. There are currently many card offers on the market, and many of them feature truly profitable maintenance terms. We will share what to look for when choosing a debit card, how to properly select a bank to open a card with, and where it is best to submit an application in 2024.
What to look for when choosing a debit card
Nowadays, you can apply for a debit card at any bank that serves retail customers. With so many offers available, it can be tricky to choose the right card, especially since their maintenance terms are often very lucrative. Here is what you should pay attention to in order to find the best product.
Issuance and Maintenance
Getting a debit card is usually free, as most banks do not charge an extra card issuance fee. However, maintenance is generally not free, involving a monthly or annual fee. Some banks waive this fee if the cardholder meets specific conditions, such as making a minimum monthly purchase amount or maintaining a minimum balance.
In addition to maintenance, banks charge fees for extra services, such as transaction and deposit alerts. This option can cost from 49 to 149 RUB per month. To save on maintenance costs, you can simply decline all optional services.
Cash withdrawal
Most people have stopped using cash, but situations sometimes arise when money is needed urgently, for instance, when cashless payment is not an option.
All cards include free cash withdrawals at ATMs and cash desks of the issuing bank. However, finding the right self-service device is not always convenient, especially if you need money urgently and the bank has a limited branch and ATM network.
For this reason, we recommend looking for cards that offer free cash withdrawals at ATMs of third-party banks.
Transfers to other banks
Almost all debit cards include free money transfers to other banks via phone number through the Faster Payments System. The standard limit for such transactions is just 100,000 RUB per month, but some banks offer less stringent limits. For example, T-Bank allows transfers of up to 5 million RUB per month via the FPS.
It is also a plus if free money transfers are available by account number.
Bonus program
All popular debit cards feature rewarding bonus programs. Some offer 0.5% to 2% on regular purchases and up to 30-50% at partner stores, while others offer up to 25% in selected elevated-reward categories and up to 30-50% at partner stores.
Interest on balance
If you have savings and want to earn a small income on them, we recommend considering cards with interest on balance. This allows the cardholder to earn a small percentage on the funds kept in the account.
Interest on balance is a rare service. As an alternative, you can consider a high-yield savings account.
Delivery
Almost all banks now offer courier delivery of cards to your home or any other convenient address. This is convenient if the bank branch is far from your home or work, and you do not have the time or opportunity to visit an office.
This service can also be useful if you are unable to leave your home due to certain circumstances.
How to choose a bank for opening a debit card
When searching for a rewarding debit card, you should consider not only the maintenance terms, but also the reputation and convenience of the issuing bank.
Here is what you should pay attention to when choosing a bank:
- License availability. Not all financial institutions offering services are authorized to issue and service debit cards. You can verify a bank's license on the official website of the Central Bank of Russia.
- Branch and ATM network. It is best if the bank has a well-developed network of branches and ATMs. This saves you from having to spend time finding and traveling to an office if you need help that requires a bank employee. It also saves you from searching long for a self-service device to withdraw cash.
- Additional features. This refers to the ability to withdraw cash at ATMs abroad or pay for purchases in foreign online stores, as well as overdraft capabilities.
- Reviews and complaints from other customers. We also recommend checking reviews and complaints from other cardholders when choosing a bank. This will help you learn about hidden pitfalls and potential difficulties you might face when issuing and using the card.

You can get a debit card from many Russian banks that specialize in retail banking. However, many of these cards are not very rewarding. Therefore, we have reviewed offers from popular and reliable banks and compiled a top 3 debit cards for 2024.
